Renovictions This got me so mad when I read about it. Basically, a company bought the building and wants to renovate it to be a top notch building, and a bunch of people that pay ridiculously low rent get pissed off and call the mayor. He showed up to their rally. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/bcvotes2009...tions_new.html The company website shows what they do to buildings, and there is no way you can do this with tenants in place. http://www.gordonnelsoninc.com/ Oh, and the "evil" landlord offered $5000 in transition money to the tenants to aid in the packing process. You know whats required in the Tenancy act? Two months notice, and one month's free rent. Evil bastards. These guys are playing a little dirty. They sent a letter saying they will sue for defamation if anyone starts running their mouths off in the press, and then say this to the press: ""While we have heard our tenants complain to the media that they are of limited means over the past couple of years, a review of the tenants information suggests otherwise as these [people with] doctorates, an architect, massage therapist, and renowned food and wine critic have income that in some cases exceed $100,000, travel internationally, collect rare art and own a $500,000-plus vacation home on Hornby Island," said company spokesman Jason Gordon. lol @ $1400 for 550 sqf. unit. downtown living (thats west end, remodeled suits) btw. how are u affiliated to this company, or not? :troll: |
If you wanna live in a prime real estate location, expect to pay. If not take your money and buy a unit in Whalley at Quattro 3. $1450 a month will be more than enough. 35 mins from downtown via skytrain. Suck it up buttercups. |
Turn? this province and the NDP and gregor robertson are the very definition of hippies. $1,450 per month for 1,100 square feet in DT, what a joke and shes complaining laudry went up? Move to surrey if you want rent that cheap. How could anyone have any sympathy for theses people, as if they have a right to live downtown at artificially low rents. |

While the tenants they're picking on are the $100,000+ tenants, I expect there are probably some tenants of lower means in there too that they're conveniently not mentioning. If I were 70 and had planned on figuring my retirement (as many people here on RS have claimed to do) on renting, I may have planned my RRSP withdrawls and contributions based on a steady increase of rent (inflation + whatever% the RTB allows). If that's the case, those retirees are now royally fucked. Now while some of you might say "Too bad, just move somewhere else", what about the community that these people are a part of and have built? Lord knows old people need all the support they can get to not slowly degenerate and die away. I'm not saying this project isn't worthy, I'm just saying that what they choose to release and the full truth are not always the same. |
If you OWN a place, you should have the right to rennovate it if you wish. The renting tenants do not have the right to make that decision for you. The only rights the tenants have, is the right to a reasonable amount of notice to find a new place - which they were given in this case. |
I fully realize that we are talking about someone's home. I realize that when I'm plastering an eviction notice on someone's door on the 2nd of the month for not paying rent. This guy ain't chasing people down for 3 months of back rent. These guys are in the business of buying buildings, renovating and restoring them and putting them back on the market at a rent that reflects the massive amount of money they put in. When the tenants say that the reno's can be done with them there...yeah, a lot probably can. Why the fuck would they? I did some reno work at a building just down the street from this one. The owner charges $2100 for a furnished 1 bedroom. Why is it this company's job to provide a home for life for these people? I'm telling you if you want to grow old somewhere, come up with a way to buy...its the only guarantee. I know...we can't buy. Well, this is a consequence of that. I fear that what they call loophole, I call the one thing in the act that is to the landlord's benefit. ONE THING. To summarize the act for anyone not familiar with it: 1. You have to be late 3 times within a 'reasonable' period before I can kick you out.Usually within the year. 2. To do so, I have to give you 30 days, which means I lose a minimum of 1/2 month's rent 3. Cause? I have to nail your ass to the wall with proof. Letters, recordings and goddamned DNA samples before an arbiter will move on cause. 4. Damage? Prove without a doubt it was them. Then chase them around town for years trying to collect. The one thing I can do is bounce you and reno your apartment and make more money. Why is people making money such a bad thing in this city? |

Vancouver already has a generous offer to seniors to delay paying property tax so they can stay in their $M homes they cannot afford the taxes on anymore. This costs every one of us money that could be used towards services that help our generation. That's ontop of already generous tax and program price breaks. Considering the generations before us have fucked us with high housing costs, high debts, unsustainable pension plans we won't participate in, ... while living through some of the best earning periods in history... I do not support bending over backwards anymore. |

I've moved out of a place because they were going to renovate. a month later I come back and nothing has happend. |

In that case, you get a payment equal to twice your monthly rental rate. Go and collect your money. It will cost you $50 to file. |

This paragraph describing action from the property managers pisses me off: Quote:
Sounds fishy. |

Either way, their request was denied. So then they just go and post eviction notices... Sounds fishy. |
Dealing with renters of anything is never easy nor fun. I just wonder who the renters would yell at if there was a fire due to an electrical problem....hmmm? |
