Netbooks only appear to be "crappier" and sluggish to notebooks only because you are using Windows.

Try Ubuntu or Jolicloud. It will fly for all your basic needs.

Not intentionally thread jacking, but I'm in the same situation as OP.

My gf basically wants the best brand new "computer" she can get with $400~ after tax.
So that's netbook, laptop, desktop, etc. But most likely, only a netbook would be able to fit in that budget.

She doesn't really have the time to shop around or order online if it's cheaper.

But she found a laptop here at FS:

I don't know anything about it though. Are these specs considered good? How fast is an Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4500?

Any other suggestions on laptop, netbook, $400 budget?

And what kind of surprise additional fees am I expected to pay when purchasing a laptop?

The T4500 cpu is rated at 1565.
Most 10.1 inch netbooks use either an Atom N450 or N455 chip and they are rated at 319/319 whereas the higher number is better.

The T4500 is going to be a faster chip, but not as fast as the newer i3/i5/i7 chips.

This particular model is over 5 lbs, so it is going to be pretty heavy for a 14 inch laptop. It has an LED screen, but I doubt she will get 3 hours on a full battery charge.

I guess for the price, it isn't bad.

I think this is the same one as the NCIX one that was posted earlier, but you can stack coupon codes at STaples.

I have a $20 off code, and you can find more codes at Red flag deals to get the price down.
