"Beijing architect lives in egg-shaped house on sidewalk

More from Green Picks blog

Dai Haifei, a 24-year-old architect in Beijing, China, found an ingenious solution to live rent-free. He built himself a mobile egg-shaped house that is powered by the sun.

The 6-foot-high structure, which is small enough to fit on a sidewalk, is made of bamboo strips, wood chippings, sack bags, and grass seed that’s expected to grow in the spring.

The pod features a solar panel on the roof that powers a lamp in the cozy space. The house cost around $1,000 to build (6427 yen), according to China Daily.

It seems Haifei has taken the trend of living in tiny spaces to a whole new level.

That's pretty cool. It would suck if a group of guys decided to roll it over for fun.

ra604 12-14-2010 12:55 AM

rofl how can he do it in there? must get very creative. Also, what if it snows?

ShanghaiKid 12-14-2010 01:41 AM

maybe he can start exploiting the economics of the space he has and flip the bed to create a bathtub and call it the "domestic transformer"

:troll:

Culture_Vulture 12-14-2010 01:55 AM

so where does he shower and use the washroom?

orange7 12-14-2010 02:18 AM

I think this is a start of some kind of solutions for the third world countries.

affordable and portable homes!

I hate to say this, but Vancouver should just build a bunch of this for low income housings. They should just sell the olympic condos at full prices to only ppl who can pay the full premium prices, and use the revenue from that to build egg-shape houses.

of course, I disgree with supply any housing to ppl who are too lazy to work.

The story is like this, this guy works for an architect company. Rent is so damn high in Beijing, he bought some building materials to build this egg. The egg is within the company premise, so he can boil water at work. Sometimes it's too damn cold, he has to stay inside the building.

His work place is like right beside the egg. He could just go back work to pee and shit.

The egg has wheels underneath. I bet he has a bike lock or something.

interesting idea but my dogs would piss all over it, no joke lol.

i too am curious where he goes to the washroom. for showering, it's not uncommon to use bath houses and community centres/gyms in asia. could you imagine entire communities of these egg pods? lol. we could make an egg city for the homeless somewhere.

I hate articles that can't get its currencies correct. Yen is the Japanese currency..RMB or sometimes called 'yuan' is the currency of PRC.

I don't see it very practical if I had explosive diarrhea in the middle of the night.

donjalapeno 12-14-2010 09:05 PM

This guy built an egg on the side of the street and refers to himself as an architect.

How about starting to tag homeless persons.
It should be a provincial problem when it comes to budgetary concerns, we're dealing with a bunch of runaways from the east that come down to Vancouver for the 'milder' weather.

Also, start creating camps for the homeless people. Pay them <min wage w/ housing, etc. Imagine crown corps that start competing with asia for manual labour.
