If this helps any, a dealership discounted 08 CB125R is about 700 less for a new 08 compared to a new 09, and as there is virtually no difference between the 2010 and 2011 250r's other than the background color of the instruments, I'd expect about 700$ per year dealer depreciation.
Ninja 250 had the market cornered up until this year and with the introduction of the CBR250r (in North America) the Kawasaki dealers may finally have to try a little harder.
Personally between a Ninja 250 with 2 CV carbs and the Honda single with FI (fuel injection), I would be buying the Honda and possibly if Kawasaki dealers are aware that many consumers are considering this, Kawasaki will be compelled to either price adjust or finally import Ninjettes with FI. :thumbsup:

new from dealer or used private sale?

A new 2010 Ninja 250r Lime Green (not used). They quoted me $5,000 (including destination and admin/documentation fee). I still think it's a little high.

If I don't get a couple more hundreds off, I might resort to a used 250r or a new/used CBR 125.

The price on the new 08 cbr125 out here is 2300$
The 2011 is a lot nicer redesign with bigger wheels, tank and style, don't know their cost or the cost for the cbr250r 2011 yet but I'm going to check today. I'll also check the price on the 09 cbr125 for you.

With the popularity of the green Ninja 250r I doubt your dealer will be stuck with it for long.

For long? It's Winter here, so I'm not that worried.

Hmm.. They called me back. They said they'd give me 10% on all upcoming purchases (gears/services).

Was checking out the CBR 250 (Honda Canada website), It is Fuel injected as opposed to the Ninja 250s Carb's. Not sure if this is something you're looking for OP but it is something to consider.

You should not be paying more than $3900 + Freight/PDI + TAX for last years Ninja 250R.
Shop around on freight/pdi, some places can be a few hundred all the way up to $800.

At this time of the year I'd be offering $3900+TAX and walking away if they don't bite. If you shop around you could also find a low-mileage used in the $3k range (09 or so).

Do not get the CBR125, get the ninja 250, it will be more of a long term bike than the honda.
Talk to Brian or Trevor at Burnaby Kawasaki. They are really good. I would try $4500 out the door cash in hand.

One thing that I found was that if for some reason you reallly wanted the cbr125 you could find them used with almost no km's on them at all.

I looked into them for a while but then it made me realize that many people just got sick of their lacking power and put them up for sale with less than 1000 kms on them.

I got the ninja 250, a 2008, for 3500 used with sliders and other add ons. Great bike overall, and if you put them and the 125 beside each other you will realize why it is a longer term bike.

The honda 250 though has some advantages from what I read it will be fuel injection, as well as have an option for abs vs the ninjas carbs and no abs.

The ninja didnt change at all really from 08 until now except colors, but must admit the new special edition pearl white is sexy as hell... :fuckyea:

Aside from dropping a bike, how much damage could there be internally on a lightly used bike under 5000km? Some? A lot? Potentially catastrophic?

There could be any number of things wrong with a used bike (just like a used car).

Bikes tend to have more internal engine wear than your average car due to the high rpm nature of there motors.
With a properly serviced bike you can have very reliable service life in the 100,000+kms range.

With only 5000kms, unless it was neglected, never had oil changed and ragged on then I think you would be pretty safe on that one. If you don't know what yo look for take it to a shop and have them look over it.

Honestly tho, I would never buy a new bike. You loose so much the moment you walk out the door. You can usually find near new bikes from those that want one and change there mind after riding for a season.
