How a Man Caught UPS Tampering With His Package.

http://gizmodo.com/5713709/how-a-man...th-his-package Video in link

Richard Lynch sent his laptop for repairs from California to the East coast. When it arrived there, the box was full of soda cans and sheets. After getting no answers from his local UPS shop, he came up with a plan.

He rigged a box with a car alarm—one that would only scream when opened. He went to the store, pay for the shipment and, ten minutes after leaving, the alarm went off. The UPS employees had opened the package, even while they are supposed not to do that.

Richard then went into the shop, confronting the employees with a video camera. The sheriff arrived to investigate, but while the fact that UPS employees opened the package is suspicious, it's not proof that they stole Richard's laptop. If you ask me, they should create smart boxes with paralyzing poisoned darts against thieves.

Coles:
-Man sent laptop for repairs
-Man received empty box.
-Man believed UPS was responsible.
-Man rigged box with alarm, dropped off at UPS.
-Alarm went off

ups is a joke..ridiculous brokerage fees and this??

StylinRed 12-16-2010 06:44 PM

now you know why they charge such insane brokerage; its the fee for rifling through the contents and repackaging before bringing it through customs

edit: oh its not really UPS its one of those Chain stores

if you guys want and have time you can actually skip that damn brokerage fees-- you can custom clear any package shipped by UPS yourself!!

its lenghtly "day" or two..
process but its totally worth it!!( i do this will all my car parts, ebay purchases, anything coming from overseas or USA)
this is whats you do:

1. if you parcel is delivered to your house or ready to be picked up--refuse and do not accept; tell UPS to keep you package on HOLD and make sure you tell them you WILL DO YOUR OWN BROKERAGE/CLEARANCE. (they will get the paperwork ready for you so you can clear the shipment yourself thru customs; if they ask about YOUR broker say that you are clearing the shipment yourself)

2. Once paperwork is ready(takes about a day) UPS will call you to pick up that paperwork(copies and originals)

3. Head down to customs office on miller road in richmond (by the airport close to DHL warehouse)(this is the hardest part: fill out the paperwork(you have to talk to customs if you ve never done this; you must complete few forms on the computer): leave it all with customs..they will call you once package is cleared...(8 out of 10 times customs tell me to wait and they stamp/clear the box right away without any inspections)

4. After you pick up the paperwork from customs head back to UPS; show them what you ve received from customs and pick up your parcel...

Basically you will have to pay tax on the shipment but you will skip damn UPS fees..

oh btw UPS is crap; they break boxes, steal SH##&...MAKE SURE YOU HAVE INSURANCE ON ups SHIPMENTS...( my first job at 17 was UPS warehouse work...i know what goes down there...)

I HOPE THAT HELPS

haha good for him

they should do this regularly for shipping companies without telling them. Kind of like "mystery shoppers" at retail/grocery stores. Keeps employees honest.

You can skip the refusal stage if you get the tracking number early. You can call UPS telling them that you will clear customs yourself and they will hold your package at their depot, that should save a day or two.

Heard stories from my cousin who worked for a shipping company,

they'd never steal anything major, but boxes from food companies were always opened, and the contents eaten (especially purdys, etc.).

Stuff that says "fragile" on it, they'd play football with.
stupid stuff like that

What happens when you pay people minimum wage and hire teenagers.

Solo_D33A 12-17-2010 12:05 AM

you can call ahead instead of them trying to ship to your place, they just call you when your shipment is at UPS or Fedex whichever you use... and they'll have the forms ready by the time they call you.

I don't know if they've changed recently.... but I never had to do any paperwork myself, I just have to hand in the paperwork they gave me at shipping office and records of purchase etc... Then you basically wait for them to tell you to pay and you get a slip saying you've paid, then you go back to shipping company, you can pick it up or have them sent it over to whichever place you want basically.

Be prepared to lose a lot of business :(

Jayhall 12-17-2010 12:12 PM

I wont have anything shipped to Canada with UPS. I wont ship anything of mine anywhere UPS. I've heard horror storys of UPS warehouse employees getting fired after stealing $100,000+ worth of goods. Really? it takes that much for action to be taken!? This is local too

taylor192 12-17-2010 12:36 PM

Purolator is just as bad, and ships all Dell equipment. My buddy has told me horror stories of how they treat some packages in the warehouse.
