To think Jin started from this....(excuse the subs, best audio quality on this one)

I've listened to his NA stuff, seemed generic for the time since he was probably marketing to appeal in the US rap scene (lots of race card played). I haven't been keeping tabs on him, but to see that he's successful in HK (even though I don't speak Canto) probably meant he wasn't getting any exposure in the US at all.

It was probably a low production free rap song for the HK government, what do you expect? Look at his Free-CD back then from 7-11. Some tracks has good beats, some has good lyrics, but others' were crap. He's doing free shit to just get more people into the rap community in HK. I went on some HK rap forum once and people in HK actually Harsh hate on him, called him a sell-out and weak lyrics. But honestly, I doubt any of those hongers can do better. Just look at that pathetic HK rap battle crap. The winner is fucking weaksauce....

This Edison rap sounds better

Born n raised in the US, went from naggered out style, bald head hip hop wear to looking like a typical asian guy, looks like a completely different person. Some call it textbook sellout tactic, but people interested in money would call it good business.

Seems to me he's making much more money in Asia than he ever did here in North America

He doesn't really churn out that much songs now, the last album I remember him releasing was with Hanjin Tan, and I only downloaded the day after I heard Hanjin live. Jin's voice to me it's even less appealing in Canto, and his lyrics aren't that great. But then its Canto and its overall a harder language to rap to.

I think he now makes a bulk of his money through commercials and what not, for example he is a spokesperson for a tutoring company. I'll try to find you a pic later on. But the pic you posted of him isn't nearly honger enough, hes even more so now LOL.

p.s. I just saw a show he hosted on TVB on Bruce Lee last night.

edit: try this youtube out for size (blocked at work for me)

I don't pay much attention to his career, but apparently he's doing great in this little city. He doesn't speak 100% fluent cantonese, doesn't understand fully and he doesn't have a pretty face, but his talent was well recognized in the hk entertainment industry. He's hosting a lot of big TV shows and partnering with big stars.

The only article I read about him is on a investment magazine (funny, right?), talking about his money management. Apparently he's like any famous rapper around the world, all controlled by a producer (in USA) and know nothing about about saving money. Of course he has changed he now owns a studio writing songs and shit. Is he making big buck? Hell yeah, but still only a fraction compare with those #1 rappers in the States. His appearance and rap style need to be changed to fit the local audience.

Anyway, he's one smart guy. Pros to him.

still remember jin from 106&park freestyle battles..sucks that even though he got signed by rough riders he was already doomed from the start even with his great lyrical skills.

BNR32_Coupe 12-19-2010 07:10 PM

what does he say after every verse? hey-la?

sounds like mc jin was "inspired" by a song called a-yo, from a famous korean duo (early 2000) called jinusean

Not to mention he made the theme song for a Series. He must've raked in quite alot for this.

hey lau = pull the anchor up = a government slogan which means "Act Now" in English.
It supposed to mean the current govn't policies are not going anywhere, "hey lau" will allow the whole situation to move forward.

Something like that.

I really don't dig how he has this pretty bad accent for Cantonese but he insists on rapping in that....

wherever he raps in English, it works pretty good. But the Cantonese stuff is all....very CBC

I wondered why they didn't use Fama as the rappers. They suck but they're honger and their canto is much better.

asian_XL 12-19-2010 10:29 PM

^ Jin's canto is good enough.

I prefer Jin > those two fama goofs, they are a big disgrace to rap

spideyv2 12-19-2010 10:38 PM

always thought Jin was dope, met him back in 06 when he came down here to host some MC battle. Too bad his music career couldnt pan out to the fullest in America

Oh there's no doubt abt that, I freakin hate fama, they're disgrace to the people of Hong Kong (not just rap), we're relegated to churning out acts like that, what a shame.

Random fact: Jin's "ABC" (debut album), most of it was produced by Far East Movement.

I still love this one, always makes you happy to listen to it.

Gt-R R34 12-20-2010 12:57 AM

as long as he's making money doing what he likes, all cool imho.

luibei 12-20-2010 06:49 AM

seriously guys, pls dont mention fama, those guys are a major joke and should never be mentioned in the same line as music or rap

ZhangFei 12-20-2010 07:29 AM

Every time they show an Episode with his song, he gets paid. If that shows goes on syndication... :fuckyea:
