Seems like a pretty straightforward answer... it's for them to have a better idea of where the signup came from.

To the end user signing up, it doesn't really matter... either way we get the $10 bonus, but to them, they get some statistics to find out whether it was worth their money paying to be a paid vendor on RS. :p
