Try this, if it doesn't work you can bring it to Crystal Mall at one of those shops.

Sounds like your laser packed it in. You can attempt to fix it yourself if you think you can do it. Or pay someone on Craigslist to do it. No one at Crystal does it I think cause none would touch my YLOD PS3.

most likely the laser is dead... tons of shops in richmond... but if its almost the cost of a new PS3, then might as well get a new one...

The shops at crystal mall don't fix ylod or lasers for ps3.
BR lasers are expensive, and a lot of times the ps3 stays dead after replacing the laser.
And if you DO find a shop that replaces lasers for you, they are not going to be the same brand of lasers you will find in a stock PS3, and it will probably burn out a lot faster.
So in the end, its better off just buying a new one.

Also, I was told that the PS3 laser was not meant to be used for BR movies because it will over use the lens. Since most games only use the lens for short periods of time loading new contents, on and off. Whereas movies will be constantly burning the lens throughout the whole duration of the movie. Not sure if this was the case for you but if you are playing BR movies, just buy a BR player.

you were "told?" pfft, that can't be right. there are so many people who bought the ps3 when it first came out just for its blu ray playback. lasers die, it happens.

are you talking about your psn account?

dont worry about it, whatever you bought on psn, it shows on your download history and you can just redownload this on your new ps3 once you logged in and connect your psn to that the new one

its all about Laser Lifetime... the more you use it, the more wear on it... if its not meant for BR playback, why include the codecs to read it...
