Canon Rebel Question

Hey guys,

I was just out playing with my new lens (Canon EF-S 55-250mm), and I was in full manual mode. I am in Nunavut right now, so as you can imagine it is snowy. I was trying to take a photo of a subject that wasn't well lit compared to it's surroundings, so I tried to use the on camera flash. With the f-stop around 5.0, the camera wouldn't let the shutter go any faster with the flash open then 1/200. To get the surroundings not completely over exposed I needed a shutter speed of around 1/1250-1/1600. Any one have any idea why it would not let me do this? I wanted to keep the background properly exposed, and use the flash to expose the subject properly.

Your camera probably has a max flash sync shutter speed of 1/200. Most cameras are around 1/200 to 1/250.

if you're in full manual mode - the only thing you can do is decrease the power of the flash to compensate. you can't change the shutter speed anymore.

Max shutter speed with the on-camera flash is 1/200s

On most external flashes there's a high speec sync function that will let you go higher, but with the camera's own flash - that's as far as it will go.
