RIP

I used to walk by there on the way to school back in the day.

I wonder if the kid was playing with his cellphone while crossing the street...

makes me wonder if it was a international student

OnTheDLo mentioned he was an exchange student

Reno tieu, exchange student from Templeton, really good at DoTA, and quite smart..
not sure how credible that is, but he seems to know about what he's talking about

RIP, sad way to go. I feel bad for the truck driver regardless of who's fault it is. i can't even imagine what he saw when he got out of his truck to see what was up..

Hastings there is all downhill from Slocan to Clark Drive.

I was there in the morning and saw everything closed off. There's no slope @ Nanaimo.

If he's running for the bus, he's crossing east towards the bus stop.

Since the truck was carrying the trailer, maybe he got fooled by the initial wide turn.

RIP.

He was my Godmother's nephew, An international student. He was a really good kid, often doing chores around the house before doing homework. Kept a good average in classes, and was in love recently.

It's such a tragedy for this young lad to pass away this early. His family are currently deeply depressed. I really don't know how to help them...

The intersection itself is probably level, but Hastings is on an incline between Clark & Slocan.

Drove by the scene shortly after the accident happened. Was hoping the guy would be alright but sadly, he succumbed to his injuries. Was weird how the police, paramedics, and firefighters all arrived at the same time...

Or it was raining the the driver didn't shoulder check/carefully check for pedestrians before turning.

it's all speculation really, my post was no different. no official news for the reason has been published but from what i've heard/read around, most of the speculation was either him running for the bus or listening to his mp3 player. given that it was the trailer of the dump truck that killed him i don't think the truck driver was to blame though. again, speculation

Errr, no. An iPhone did not kill him, a dump truck killed him, as a result of either him, the driver, or him and the driver not paying enough attention.

It is absolutely awful to see somebody so young get killed but it serves as a reminder to people to pay attention to whatever you are doing. It's simple but so many accidents in life just plain old boil down to not paying enough attention to both what you are doing and what is happening around you.

RIP. Couple of my friends knew him...

wtf is up with Nanaimo.
Always hear about people getting killed there... anywhere along Nanaimo.
And I see so many lamp posts with flowers or pictures or something.

Sometimes it makes me paranoid driving there... It's like I have to be even move
cautious than normal, thinking I have a higher chance to hit someone there than elsewhere.

RIP to the poor kid... so young too...

Mr.Money 01-16-2011 06:37 AM

rip kid.....i'm currently reading this thread and playing Moby - Natural Blues.

its so sad to know this young guy didn't get to experience his teenage years, like going for your first driving test, passing high school, going to college, getting that first job..

my heart to his family, the hardest thing is losing a loved one & This is awful to start off the new year for the family.

RIP.

that intersection is pretty bad. there are 3 well used bus stations located at that corner (east bound hastings, west bound hastings, and south bound nanaimo). the intersection is well used and always has ppl waiting for the light. i live relatively close to that intersection and frequent the grocery stores around the area and know well how bad checking around the corner is when trying to make a turn. at the corner i believe where the accident happened sits a fairly large building which is built close to the corner of that intersection with no windows so thus for drivers, the line of site to see around the corner is bad. there are always drivers in a rush to make the corner, and pedestrians in a rush to catch the bus or to catch the intersection walking light trying to bend the rules...

RIP to the teen that got him.

Oleophobic 01-16-2011 09:13 AM

definitely a bad intersection. Driving westbound/eastbound on hastings you'll always notice how slow it gets around the Nanaimo st area mostly due to the quick light cycle and the fact that it is a popular place for people to turn left. There are also a ton of pedestrians crossing nanaimo or hastings to get to the bus stops, grocery stores, the royal bank, etc. It's a nightmare trying to turn left or turn right.

It doesn't have a dedicated left turn signal either, does it? I hate it when I have to drive through there.
