Why not to drive next to another car

When I learned to drive I was taught to always stagger your vehicle in moving traffic. That meant that you never drove right next to another car or in another car's blind spot.

This way, if there was an unexpected obstruction in the road ahead the cars could merge down into one lane quickly and easily much like the teeth on a zipper joining together.

Quite often however the only way to keep the space to the side of your car clear is to go with the flow of traffic, an act commonly frowned upon should the flow of traffic be above the posted limit.

Here's a video of a transport truck losing control and smashing through the center barrier into oncoming traffic. Fortunately the driver of the car with the camera had space to swerve into.

So, minimize the time you spend in other people's blind spots and keep the areas around your car as clear as possible. This is also a good reminder of why it is best to keep to the right except to pass.

Oh my god.

Fortunately when I was learning how to drive, my father was learning to ride a motorcycle and one of the things that made him aware of was to always have an escape route in traffic, something he really hammered home while he was teaching me to drive, god forbid I ever face a situation like that, but thinking like that has come in handy more then once for me.
