Right Turn Light on Brunette Ave

Getting off Highway 1 to Brunette avenue westbound, I see cars turn right even though the light is red. Google street view below:

Is this actually allowed? I always wait for the right turn light to turn green but everytime I am behind a car and the light is red, they always go. Anyone else see this happen when they are at this intersection?

As long as there's not a sign saying "No Right Turn on Red" or words or images to that effect, sure it's allowed, AFTER you've come to a complete stop at the line.

Yup, turn right if it's clear. People waiting for that light to turn green can really back up traffic, all the way to the freeway.

Volvoman 01-25-2011 09:27 AM

If that is the case, what is the point of the traffic light there?

I agree with you, just wondering about the reasoning behind the right turn light there.

You can't really understand if you haven't driven there.

Traffic on Brunette is heavy all day - if it was a simple merge, it would take forever to make that right, and traffic would REGULARLY back up onto the freeway. Even now it does sometimes, if you get a lot of big trucks in a line that take a long time to get going at the light, but it would be far worse if there wasn't the occasional break in the Brunette traffic. Plus, there's a left turn from Brunette eastbound to get on the freeway westbound that has to stop the Brunette westbound traffic, so it only makes sense to add a green light there to help the flow.

That about sums it up. Part of my job requires driving a 5T and I'm in that area all the time, to and from N.Van. If that left turn light wasn't there it would back things up (worse than it already is) all the way to Stewardson, during rush hour.

On a side note, make sure your seatbelt is on when you're on either side of that on/off ramp. Cops love that spot.
