Anybody have an N repeater set up in their home? I have a Netgear WNDR3700 - which has a pretty strong signal. Problem is, we just moved, and the router is on the top floor - because that's where all the inputs for the cable/telephone, etc comes into the house. Each of the floors have concrete, because of the radiant heating - so I'm having trouble accessing a decent signal in parts of the basement. I'm thinking of getting a repeater to extend the N wireless. I have Ethernet drops going into a few rooms in the basement - so I can easily wire one into there no problem - it'll go back directly into the router, or through a gigabit switch then into the router. My question is, does anybody have any experience in this? I tried googling it, but most of the information I can find is quite a bit older, and I know new models have come out. I don't mind buying one and flashing DD-WRT onto it, but I'm not sure which models to look at. I see there are a few Wireless N Access points, but they're all around the $100 price range - anybody know any cheaper ones? I appreciate any input! |
I have something similar - Trendnet N router with DD-WRT for a main access point, Linksys G with DD-WRT working as a bridge for some IP cameras, and a D-Link with DD-WRT as a bridge for machines on my workbench downstairs. Works pretty well! If you can get routers with the same chipset, you should be able to set up a WDS MESH around the house for even, solid coverage (it SHOULD work with different chipsets, in theory, but I've had problems getting encryption going with WDS between Atheros and Broadcom units). |
just make sure that if you set up a wireless network with 2 AP's to set them to different channels, otherwise they will interfere with each other. Channels bleed into 4 channels up/down so use channels 1/6/11 usually. |
Thanks for the help guys, Any recommendations for models to flash? |
One of mine is a D-Link DIR-615, it flashes nicely, but not all hardware revisions are supported (check the DD-WRT forums). Your Linksys uses an Atheros chipset, so if you want to bridge them using WDS or set up a MESH network, the D-Link should work great. A bunch of the ASUS RT-Nxx models are flashable too; they're really well-spec'd (lots of RAM and NVRAM). My sister has an RT-N16 and it works great with DD-WRT, including the printer sharing ports. |
