What to do with a Cognitive Systems degree?
 

Currently in my third year of BSc. Cognitive Systems at UBC and trying to figure out what careers I could try out. For those who don't know, Cognitive Systems is an integration of Philosophy, Psychology, Computer Science and Linguistics, or at least it is so at UBC.

Anyone have any stories or advice?

:fullofwin: I'd also love to hear from you if you're from one of the areas that make up cogs.

A few of my friends applied for co-op, got placement for a year or so at decent places (rim, google, telus, accenture) and with that on the resume, landed a similar job after grad. In other words, cogs==cpsc==programming, at least in my group of friends.

Thanks rage :) Thought about that, but I stink at any sort of programming... did your friends major in cpsc?

Some are cpsc major, some are cogs major. In the end, they both landed similar jobs. Programming at some big companies. Oh and one became a dev full time for his local startup. That was a huge success.

Same goes for SFU.

One of our senior Business Analysts has a Cog Sci. Degree from SFU. FYI, we are a Software Development firm.

I would say that MIS related jobs would be a good fit. If you envision yourself to be more on the technical side, I don't think it's too far of a jump as long as you have some basic technical skill sets when you finish school.

David simultaneously believes that people should avidly pursue higher education endeavors, and that degrees matter less than people think, and he'll try to explain how he holds these two thoughts simultaneously.

edit: Thought I'd add that im looking at cognitive systems at UBC. Havn't decided which co-op to look into science wise if nursing doesnt work out.

I went and tried to look up MIS, but I don't really have a grasp on what it is exactly...

Ooo, too bad I have class on the 31st, or I'd ask you where Dr. Ascher's speaking. Take your time deciding ;) but I've heard that besides comp-sci, many of the science majors are pretty much stepping stones into grad school. So you might want to keep that in mind.

^ sweet man, i'd really appreciate that. i'd be going to the seminar but I have classes tomorrow so obviously I can't make it.

Definately concentrate more on CPSC and if you can and apply for Coop you'll be set. I don't have any friends that majored in Cog, but all my CPSC friends landed jobs after their BSc and they only require very basic programming.

errr, I missed it today because I was studying for an exam today. I will be going to the 2 presentations tomorrow on engineering though.
