hooking up my tv/ps3 to reciever Im going to buy a receiver so i can hook up my ps3/tv. Right now my ps3 is hooked up to my tv via HDMI. What i want to do is have the audio come from my tv speakers plus from the surround sound speakers. Will simply adding a optical out from my tv to my receiver work? |
you connect the HDMI cable to the receiver and a HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV |

If your TV uses HDMI (not DVI), then it will carry the sound signal as well. HDMI was originally developed to be a single carrier for both the Video and Audio signals. As far as quality, I don't think having a dual cable optical + HDMI layout will be any better than a single HDMI setup. |
just optical out from your ps3 to reciever tv to reciever will not carry the signal from the HDMI usually, its usually just for the TV channels off its built in DTV tuner |
Why do you want sound of your tv speakers? |
keep in mind some receivers are weird. I know of one model (Yamaha) where you connect the PS3 to the receiver through HDMI for the video signal, but for the sound, you need either optical or RCA cables. |
since im relaying sound from ps3 to tv via hdmi, then cant i relay sound from tv to receiver via optical? |

Connect PS3 HDMI to TV HDMI. Connect optical cable from TV to receiver. |

If you need some new speakers these are excellent for the price. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Pioneer+...&skuId=1148218 Should be coming to Canada in the next few months. |
Your best bet would be the following PS3 -> Receiver HDMI Cable Box / Satillite Box -> Receiver HDMI Receiver -> TV HDMI Hook up your speakers using surround. When you use the PS3 you will still get the 5/7.1 channels you want, and if you watch TV (Standard Def is Stereo, HD Channels are mostly 5.1) you can either use the Dolby Virtual Surround modes or use the original Surround signals on the HD channels. |
Hdmi to receiver to tv will allow you to choose audio either from your tv or your surround speakers its up to you or are you saying you want your tv speakers to act like a centre channel? in which case i think you might be able to plug a cable into your "centre channel out" to your tvs speaker.... not sure exactly but try |
your built-in speakers are probably garbage anyways..don't bother complicating it. |
Exactly my setup right now. HDMI from PS3 to TV (Only for Video) RCA from PS3 to Reciever (Only for Audio) Reciever RCA or Optical to TV Speaker OUT <=== This is so you can use TV speakers as well as reciever speakers. However some TV's will disable built-ins if you use an external speaker. This also allows me to watch regular TV with the reciever speakers. PS3 Allows you to use seperate outputs for video and sound. Might not be the best quality but because my reciever is an older one, it doesn't have HDMI audio input, so I just use RCA. Alternative to this set-up, I can also suggest you hook up your reciever to the TV as an external sound output. That way ANY sound that goes to ur TV will be output through the external speakers. So you can just plug your HDMI from PS3 straight to TV and get sound from external speakers. |
Don't forget you can turn on multi output for some in the PS3s settings. I do this so I can run my 5.1 Tritton headset and TV speakers at the same time so I dont have to switch it since I'm not using a receiver. I just mute the TV when I'm gaming. then unmute when Im watching tv. |
