I get it at Save On. Usually in the Health Food/Organic Aisle.

It's hard to find because it's not commonly used but also it's fantastic for your skin. I know several people who use it as a moisturizer and treatment for dry skin, ezcema, minor abrasions and it's about a billion times cheaper than buying more expensive and less effective creams.

The stuff at saveon is refined btw. Go to whole foods or choices if you want the virgin stuff.

Thank you newgirl. Marketing is killing off some of our real healthy choices.
I don't waste my time on extra virgin olive oil unless for dressing. When I fry anything I do it the old way with schmaltz and lighten it up with olive oil. Schmaltz is basically pure lard. Oils that create toxic compounds when heated usually only do so when over heated and burn.

ive been looking for pure lard but all i can find is partially hydrogenated crap or veg lard

i'm really surprised at all of the people posting in this thread who are knowledgeable/open minded.

anyways... i started getting coconut oil from whole foods. save on sells unrefined but it's more expensive than whole foods and you get a lot less, and the brand i got from them came in a plastic jar. (i prefer glass containers)

not based on my experience, but i've heard from others that different brands have slightly differnet flavours, consistency, and taste. still solid at room temp, but just slight variances.

i've noticed that selection really varies. 2 save ons in richmond... one carried, one didn't. rupert street superstore has a nice organic section which carries Nutiva brand. superstore in richmond's got nothing.

schmaltz is basically lard from chickens instead of pigs, IIRC. If it's from beef, it's tallow. Any of them are great choices for cooking, as long as it's not hydrogenated. If you want to use a non animal fat, use coconut.

I got my coconut oil from one of the Punjabi stores on Main street. I recall it was 7.99 for 750 ml.

Thanks to thenewgirl for suggesting using it for dry skin. Never thought of that before. I just applied it to combat my flaking face from windburn.

As for cooking, I noticed it smokes quite easily when frying. I am using it nowadays for flavoring mostly like butter.

I dunno man, I have seen schmaltz made from pigs (Smalec in polish).

First line of wiki: "Schmaltz or schmalz is rendered chicken, goose, or pork fat "

SkinnyPupp 03-15-2011 02:38 AM

Ah, I thought all schmaltz was Jewish

For those looking for Coconut oil still, I noticed when I was at Planet Organic yesterday that they carry at least 10 different brands.

Cunning> It's also really good for your scalp too apparently. I haven't tried it but this is what I'm told.

It is more for Med temp cooking then high high, it's kind of like butter that way and other oils that are solid at room temp totally.

ImpactZ 04-11-2011 09:02 AM

It's good for moisturizing your scalp and making your hair nice and shiny and preventing split ends.

Anyone know much about grapeseed oil? My mom's using it now and I know little about it.

Jermyzy 04-11-2011 08:34 PM
