Learning a language
 

Alright, so being born and raised in Canada.. my Cantonese isn't up to par and I would like to improve it.. (looking to improve my speech, dont care about writing)

My Canto skills include:
- I can listen and understand most basic everyday conversations (may need help fully understanding more complex words though)
- I can speak it but my pronounciation is off and I forget how to say words at times..
- Writing = non-existent


Is there any online programs or learning equipment that may help me improve my Cantonese?
Yes, I know I should just practice more with the people around me but most of my friends are CBC and their chinese is no better then mine..

With MDBG, you can search or translate words and even click the characters to hear how they sound like.

Im gonna try the Learn Chinese Cantonese (Pimsleur)
Apparently its kinda like the Rosseta Stone program..

Hopefully this goes well.. after sharpening up my cantonese.. ill have another stab at mandarin.. which i totally failed at during high school haha...

I've used the Pimsleur program for Mandarin, I didn't find it as useful as Rosetta Stone. Only issue is one that you've raised, that there isn't a cantonese module available. I've also used the FSI program. I found it effective when supplemented with other programs:

If you're really dedicated to learn / sharpen your skills, you have to immerse yourself with the language. Grab some C-Pop albums, movies, and hang out with others that speak the language. I doubt your level is extremely basic in cantonese, but if it is grab some children's books and study them.

watching chinese tv is probably the best way to pick up the lingo etc. watch the ones WITH chinese subtitles also helps.

I dunno. If chinese tv is anything like greek tv, they speak so fucking fast on the news etc and it might be a little difficult

Ya iv tried the Chinese Cantonese (Pimsleur) the canto used is pretty basic.. wasnt that difficult..

I guess I just gotta watch more drama and try to speak it more =/

i'm like you too. growing up i was so whitewashed. i found that it really helped to communicate in cantonese a lot. in your situation, why not try conversing with family in cantonese a lot more? you'd be surprised at how fast it can improve because i'm assuming you talk to them everyday, whether it'd be just a little bit, or a lot.

i'd say watching regular chinese tv shows with english subtitles is best..

i used to be one of those anime watchers and some of the language is in me now from watching it..

just make sure the stuff you watch is like down to earth and not that lawyer/police crap..

and listening to music is probably not a good idea.. i can understand most cantonese things people say to me but if i hear it in a song i cant understand shit.. maybe its just me though.
