given the 4500 budget, my vote will be same as Fei-Ji, I would recommand a KA24DE "non-swapped" 240SX, ths stock motor isnt shit.. LOL.. beats integras and preludes if you really want to trash it around... but as a DD, its plenty... get a good set of coils and you are good to go... think abt it.... with 4500, you really arent going to be fast anyhow... so lets just focus on the handling =P

mk3 supras only came with a N/A 7MGE or a 7MGTE.

mk2 "celica supras" came with only a N/A 5MGE.


my first car was a MK2... it was nice. handled like a boat though. straight piped her with a magnaflow at the rear.. and sounded like no other car on the road. absolutely loved it. a straight piped straight six just sounds so awesome.

as for the ae86, theyre good cars too. those 4AG's are pretty bullet proof if well taken care of. i had 340xxx kms on mine.. and still ran like a champ. doesnt burn a drop of oil. shoved on a set of coil overs on it, some wheels and it was slide ready. the car has way more aftermarket support than the mk2 supra though. locally, there is a forum called dorikaze and the guys gots lotsa used parts for sale, so parts arent a problem for that car..

for the budget of 3500... an older toyota is probably the best bang for your buck. i seen a very clean old school starlet for sale on craigslist.. 4AG running weber carbs. that thing would scream.

I'd definitely get a 94+ Integra GSR or a Prelude SR-V.
Those things are total workhorses and rarely breakdown. They are also a thrill to drive and great on gas. Parts are also cheap and readily available since there's a million of them on the road.

91 or early production 92 Eagle Talon TSI with 6 bolt block and 4 bolt diff. Can't beat the performance for the money. I found mine for $2000 and put another $2000 into it on performance upgrades. It was clean with low mileage and came with a new 16g turbo upgrade and a socketed ecu for tuning with a maf to map conversion. I added coilovers, exhaust, and wheels all for a total cost of $4000. The car weighs 3000lbs has 280hp/290tq and is AWD. If I add methanol injection and a front mount intercooler it could make around 400hp. It has been rock solid and reliable. The 4g63 is an amazing engine!! It basically has the same performance as a stock Subaru STI without the price tag.

not sure how mechanically inclined you are but. 3500 can probably get a 1jz in your truck.
that is a very strong reliable motor. starting out at a conservative 280hp. stock internals ive herd can with stand 500hp. apparently after that you get vavle float.

a less popular choice would also be first gen neon with the 2.0 DOHC. 150hp 2500 pounds stock. can find decent ones for under 2 grand that leaves you money for suspention exhaust intake. I least suggestion looking them up.

Im still stuck in a rut about what I am after.
I recently found out that around the same price i can pick up a Audi A4, how are they as far as reliability and cost to run?
UGH, to many options. Now the decision is to look nice, or to perform? Can get into a quick car that looks ghetto, or get into a slower car that looks nice...

Any used car will require some degree of maintenance so it will all depend on how well you want to maintain it. Do you want to buy something and drive it into the ground? Or, do you plan to keep the car for a while and want it in good running condition?

The reason why people say that Japanese cars are more reliable is because they will continue to run without regular maintenance. I currently own two sporty cars - a 1992 Integra GSR and a 1989 BMW 325is. I've obviously had to spend some money on the Bimmer (getting it up to proper running condition), but to say that it isn't reliable is a bit of an exaggeration. The mechanicals on old German cars are typically pretty solid.

I've owned the Integra since 2002 and I've probably spent over 3K in maintenance and repairs. I've done a timing belt, brakes, master cylinder replacement, two sets of tires, replaced various parts, and done regular oil changes. There are things I have neglected though like a clutch replacement, other fluid changes, suspension work, etc. and it still runs. If I were to neglect those things on the Bimmer, it probably wouldn't run as long.

My 2 cents.

I originally suggested the Supra....but if its your first car, go with something that looks nice and is slower. You will want to sell your first car within a year anyways if your like most of us on the forum. Im constantly changing cars, owning more than one per year for the last 11 years. Going slow to start will do 2 things. Save your license and your life....I got lucky having a quick car being young...but not everyone does.....

I've herd Audi A4's have lots of little problems like wiring and sensors going constantly. anyone else hear of this?

Of coarse most the car suggested hear have reputations for Something bad.

Yup, my bro had an older A4 I think and it would get wet in the passenger foot rest, then the car really crapped out because rain was somehow getting inside from underneath and shorting out and rusting an expensive component that which was making the car drive like crap. Could have been the ECU, I dont know.

GL finding a good 240SX that hasn't been rat bagged by wanabe drifters. Ford Probes are good starter cars if you take care of them, the import equivalent is the MX-6, they are FWD tho. MK3 Supras are nice but I wouldn't get a turbo one to start with as turbo = more parts and far more $$ maintenance costs.

Its not RWD but they are great fun fast cars that are good on gas. I've owned three of these and if I was in the market for one I'd be jumping on it.
If you are buying a 240sx or AE86 GET IT INSPECTED they are rust buckets I deal with them everyday and if your not willing to put some love into the chassis don't risk buying one without the inspection.

OK so basically a mk3 supra would be a good investment for a car im going to keep for a while, as there boat like handling characteristics and slower performace mean it woulnd't be as good of a contended as of now. 240sx is a great balance of speed and handling but stay away from old drift cars and rust buckets, much like a AE86 Corolla. A Audi a4 would be a good bet if i was an electrician and had a garage to tear down my car.

As far as 240sx's what should I look for and what should I stay away from? I've heard they have a brake balancer that sucks amongst other issues im sure. Id be looking for a s14, would you suggest a conversion or just buy a new?

i had a first gen talon turbo and despite ppl saying theyre unreliable i never had an issue... just change oil and fluids at regular intervals

So its really looking like a 240sx is going to be the best bet.
What should i look for and look out for?
