Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau has issued a tsunami warning for the eastern coast of Taiwan. The bureau said it expects a tsunami resulting from the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Japan to strike the east coast towns of Hualien at 09:32 GMT, Taitung at 09:36 GMT, and Jilong at 10:04 GMT. Although it projected the wave would be 50 centimeters (about 20 inches) high and have minimal impact on the coast, the government has nonetheless urged the public to pay attention to all tsunami warnings along the coast.
But local television station TVBS is reporting that some along the coast had yet to hear the warnings. The TV station showed fishermen and hikers being told to leave beach areas by journalists and police. Emergency vehicles are also traveling along the coast warning residents.
Meanwhile schools and offices were closed at 8:00 GMT in Keelung city, Taitung county, Hualien county, Yilan county and some coastal districts in New Taipei city. There are no major petrochemical, steel or chip plants along Taiwan’s rugged eastern coast.
Hey Chun, how are they warning the people there? SMS? Sirens?
A lot of the systems are set up here that you can register with your workplace and they SMS you and wait for your reply. Most people turn on the TV as well since in Tokyo, everything is still running. They only had to shut off the cellular network judging by the sheer mass of traffic they would have on their networks.
I didn't hear any sirens though...

Shit... I am at work right now on the Central Coast of Vietnam like 100 meters from the ocean. Surprised but thankful we have no warnings here. Would have thought given the angle that we could get hit.

My bad, went out to the ATM / grocery store. Heard they were shutting off the ATM systems and I freaked cause I had no cash on me. The grocery store was completely sold out of most instant goods since we're told not to use the gas burners.
Many of the business men (salary men) are wandering the streets. It's absolutely packed, the most I've seen by maybe 10 times since I came here. Hotel lobbies in the area are also pretty packed as many people can't get home. The train system shut down, naturally.
Now, it sounds like mayhem but to be completely honest, in the center of Tokyo, people are pretty calm and just worried about how to go home. Most people are in pretty good moods, there's no damage anywhere and you could barely tell that a massive earthquake even hit (other than the massive crowds, that is).
It's also difficult to feel the aftershocks on the streets, so most people out and about aren't even aware of how much activity is still going on.

Wouldn't leave it up to the Vietnamese government to warn everyone if something was headed here but checked the Tsunami Warning online and there is nothing to indicate VN will get hit.
