I don't care if there's a warning or not just preparing for the worst case scenario.

better be safe than sorry for those who are in Richmond. They are all saying it's hard to predict what the height of the wave is when it reaches coastal due to sea bed height changes so I'd take that 30cm estimation with caution. Someone already said earlier who study Earth and Ocean Science that waves don't dissipate much energy traveling across the ocean.

Well on the bright side, Japan has both the infrastructure and resources to deal with such an event. As they were saying on the BBC live feed, the Japanese are pretty much brought up with the mentality that an earthquake can hit any minute. That isn't to say that they're constantly in fear or what not, but they're certainly far better prepared to deal with this than we will ever be. From what it looks like so far though, the Indian Ocean earthquake in 2004 was WAY worse than this one now. Of course, time can only tell..

"A Tsunami Warning means that all coastal residents in the warning area who are near the beach or in low-lying regions should move immediately inland to higher ground and away from all harbors and inlets including those sheltered directly from the sea. Those feeling the earth shake, seeing unusual wave action, or the water level rising or receding may have only a few minutes before the tsunami arrival and should move immediately. Homes and small buildings are not designed to withstand tsunami impacts. Do not stay in these structures."

Shallow earthquake = larger initial tsunami.

Waves rise in height as they reach shore due to shallow sea floor..

Aftershocks can also cause additional tsunamis.

what's scary is where the waves will go next, and how many 3rd world countries are at risk who are the total opposite of prepared for a tsunami
