NAS Hard Drive Write Speed > Read Speed, normal?
 

Installed a WD 2.0T EARS in my new Synology. Used Cyrstal Mark to test the HD speed, it shows write speed is quicker than read speed. When it was installed in my PC, it shows 118MB/s write, 88MB/s read. What's happening here?

Your PC's NIC's downstream is probably being clogged with pr0n downloads.

Green drives suck for NAS anyway, especially if you're running a RAID configuration.

it's a single-bay NAS, my Green drive fits the spec of it.

and I wish I get 30MB/s of porn download speed LOL. No matter how the NAS connects, the numbers are similar.

how come the green's suck in a NAS?

could also be of the sector size

Green drive also has LLC problem, the drive spins down after 8 seconds which will wear out faster, I have already disabled it.

I don't know about Synology but QNAP doesn't recommend the use of Green drives in their NAS boxes....

should i be running wdidle3 in a non-NAS setup? when i searched for wdidle3 briefly it shows it as a firmware tool, rather than a dos command toggle.

edit2: just did it using the following instructions:

- burn the iso or make a bootable iso:
- extract the iso with i.e. winrar.
- http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/customize.html ; scroll to 'Making UBCD memory stick'
- it won't be your T: probably, use the 'list all drives' command to see which one (of 3 on mine when booted)
- upon first boot it said bootmgr missing (probably 'cause i disconnected the other drives when performing this), so go into the BIOS first to re-select the correct boot drive

Parking heads that many times a day is not good... Also spinning down and up and down and up will kill a drive faster than leaving it spinning 24x7x365.

When it comes to raid or nas don't cheap out... At least buy regular desktop drives, forget about the green drives. If it's mission critical data then invest in enterprise class drives, although you probably wouldn't do so unless you were running a more expensive / higher performing raid or nas.

disabling it makes your drive slightly slightly faster and much more reliable.

I have 2 WD Greens EARS 2TB running in RAID mirror. No problems. I used WDIDLE3 to set the idle to 5min. rather than disabled.

RAID is about data availability and uptime. NOT a replacement for backups.

how come you set it to 5 minutes rather than disabled?

I remember seeing some users had some slowdown problems with it if it was completely disabled so I set it to the max timer of 5min. I think it was in NCIX forums but I can't remember. It's easy to change anyways if needed. These are great drives. Quiet, low power, low heat.

We build and install commercial- and enterprise-grade surveillance DVRs, they have to handle sustained data transfer 24x7... we use the Western Digital Caviar Black drives almost exclusively, and they've been great - fast, and reliable. You pay about a 50% premium over the Green drives, but it's worth it.

Yup. It definitely depends on what your needs are. Mine are storage and accessibility over speed. I also have 2 WD Black 2TB drives in RAID. They're awesome but overkill for my needs.
