I'm kind of touched that you would use a fail on me. :)

Personally, I've always proof-read my own stuff that I type for short stuff like forum posts. It's not because I'm a snob when it comes to spellcheck, it's because wayy back when I first started posting on forums in the early 2000s, there were no spellchecks on browsers. So I guess it became a habit of mine to just plain proof-read my own posts. It's not a perfect system, I still make mistakes sometimes, but my posts are far from looking like Mugen Evolution's or some other careless poster.

Now if I was typing up a lengthy report for class, where I'd get docked a point for every single grammatical/spelling error, I would use a spellcheck. AFAIK, no one would use an internet browser to write up a report...

fuck... i completely forgot why i uninstalled FF4. this final version is the same. it lags when I open a new tab (speed dial) and try to select or close another one. everything else feels faster though, including flash performance, form filling etc.

3.6.15 was muuuuuuuuch snappier.

dangonay 03-21-2011 04:13 PM

Tom's Hardware has a pretty good comparison of browsers (though they're catching hell because FF4 just released after their article and they didn't test FF4 in their comparison).

However.....IE9 did very well against Chrome and Opera.

I prefer user-friendly than speed difference that I can't even notice.

Basically every major feature that is found in every other browser was in Opera first ... They continue to offer a highly-customizable, leading-edge browser that routinely ranks as the most secure, is often one of the best browsers when it comes to supporting web standards, and is packed with features while offering excellent performance and stability (something that can't be said of Firefox and the like once you start loading up the plugins to match the features you get out of the box with Opera).

ddr 03-21-2011 09:02 PM

i used to be a big advocate for Opera, but their lack of customization turns off most initial adopters. Their features are great, but when it prevents a page from loading properly, or an external plug-in to call upon another program, most users either don't understand it or go right back to IE. I couldn't get anyone that wasn't more computer literate to stick to using Opera.

Maybe it's the websites i frequent, but I've never had FF3 crash one me once, and it's snappy enough and loads pages fast enough on my vertical screen that it's faster than my eyes can see. and i'm too used to lastpass (on Opera now), xmarks, noscript, adblock etc. on FF. the most interesting feature on Opera is the antivirus one imo.

I wonder what you consider user friendly (that IE9) lacks? I must be missing something since everything I do works great on IE9.

Don't confuse secure with "insufficient market share to care". FF was secure too, until it became popular.

No spell check
No image location right click
History drop down in URL box sucks

I applaud Microsoft for wanting to give more screen real estate by shrinking everything into the top bar - yet it just didn't work for me. I found I had to either sacrifice the length of the URL bar, or the size of the tabs - such that I couldn't get much information from either.

I installed FF4 and like it so far. The Beta FF4 hung, yet the RC is pretty good.

It's still the most secure. What's your point ? Opera isn't like Apple's OSX where it's the first to go down at every single hacking contest, but has so little market share that they really don't need to care.

Like I said, they routinely rank amongst the best in terms of security against other browsers, even in apples-to-apples comparisons.

Don't need spell check. I proofread anything I'm worried about for other errors (like grammar) and to make sure it makes sense. Even grammar checkers have difficulty with certain writing styles, and as such they are useless to me as well.

Besides, if I needed one there are several choices available as add-ons. Isn't that one of the main selling points of browsers like FF - that you can extend the functionality? Complaining about the lack of a feature that comes "stock" with a browser is a little silly, unless the feature wasn't available at all on other platforms.

For images, I prefer to look at the image properties.

History drop down box sucks? I'm not sure what you mean, as I can't guess the meaning of the word "sucks". Can you be more specific?

IESpell sucks, and there aren't many others for IE. Firefox's built in spell check underlines words in red - its awesome.

Besides we've already had this discussion and concluded more don't want to proof read, its slow and outdated when FF has a spell check that makes is faster and easier.

The menu option is even in IE yet doesn't work. "Show Picture" is completely greyed out when right clicking images. Dumb. I shouldn't have to do 3 actions to complete something that another browser lets me do in 1 action.

History was probably the wrong word. I mean the URL drop down. If its empty in Firefox and I click the URL drop down it gives me a list of my most visited sites. Awesome. In IE it gives me crap sites that differ from the list of most popular sites displayed in the new tab.

Also, if I am on a site and click the drop down it gives me lists of similar sites I have visited before. Thus if I want to get to a site then cannot remember the exact area I was in, I click the drop down and look at the history of all links I've visited at this site. In IE I get the same list of crap unrelated sites.

Microsoft really needs some new designers, cause IE9 blows.

AzNightmare 03-23-2011 11:42 AM

lol, don't think I will ever use IE again, unless Chrome does something really stupid on me.

6insomnia9 03-23-2011 11:56 AM

chrome for the win.

twitchyzero 03-23-2011 06:21 PM

finally moved onto FF4...a lot faster for me compared to 3.6x
reminds me of the original version I used back in 2005 when i first made the switch from IE

Proofreading is outdated? Maybe you should have proofread your own post. Then you might have caught the numerous spelling and grammar mistakes. If you typed this in FF then you either ignored the spell check or the spell check sucks considering it missed a word in the above quote.

I'd like you to specifically show me where you need to do 3 actions in IE that FF 4 lets you do in 1 action. Maybe I'm stupid, but I can't seem to find these huge flaws in IE9 that make browsing a long, drawn out affair that you imply.

What? I click my drop down in IE9 and get my most recently visited sites. There, I just tried it as I was typing this and I got my most recent sites again. I don't have a clue what you're talking about.

The recent history feature in FF is nice though, and beats IE9 in that regard.

Isn't your job somehow related to software design? Perhaps you should head on over to Microsoft since you are clearly a better designer/programmer than anyone they have working for them.

Relax fucktard <- that word is underlined as well in FF, and this sentence not exactly grammatically correct, yet who the fuck cares?

I don't want to have to proof read everything I post. I want to quickly scan for obvious mistakes and be done with it. You can waste your time proofreading, my time is more important.

Post a picture in this thread.

In FF4 it took
1. right click image
2. click Copy Image Location
3. click Insert Image
4. right click
5. click Paste
6. click OK

Let me know how many extra steps it takes to do this in IE9. This is a pretty common action for anyone posting on forums.

The director of all development at our company is an ex-Microsoft employee, who gives presentations on what NOT to do after seeing the processes inside Microsoft for years. There i a reason Microsoft is losing market share, ignore it at your peril.

tiger2132 03-29-2011 01:30 PM

speed is all i really care about
i dont need a bunch of luxury options and such
chrome is the best for me
+ i can open like 5 tabs and speed is not compromised
