2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 to get 620HP

Spy Photos: ZL-What? 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Refresh Gets Minor Upgrades, Way More Power
By Mike Magrath | March 16, 2011

Here we've got spy shots of the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 test mule rocking some updated exterior bits -- and a new engine packing what we hear is over 600 horsepower.

Well that didn't take long, did it? It was only last month at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show that Chevy took the wraps off the GT500 besting 550-horsepower Camaro ZL1.

While we've got photos and rumors, Car and Driver seems to have an inside source close to the project who says that the 5.4 will be enlarged to 5.8 liters and that the supercharger will be switched to a four-lobe Eaton TVS -- the same blower model on the ZL1, CTS-V and Audi S4. Oh, and that 620 is the magic horsepower number.

Consider the last time we tested a GT500, with only 540 horsepower, it hit 4.3 and ran the quarter at 12.5 @ 115.3.

Your move, GM. Your move.

The horsepower wars these days are getting a bit insane...

Shouldn't it be called the GT620 now? When can we expect GT1000? :haha:

Uh no. The GT500 name in it's 44 year history was never a reference to the car's horsepower.

i like...i don't want to look like a snotty rich guy,so when i buy this....I'm gonna put the V6 sticker on there just to keep it really low key

What about the 350?

Adrenaline Rush 03-18-2011 05:39 PM

Going to be tough to put all that power down - even the current GT500 needs more tire.

That said, GM could always use the LS9 (640 hp ZR1 engine) instead of the LSA in the Camaro if it really wants to play hardball.

All the horsepower in the world won't help this car if it is the same, bloated, nose heavy 4000 + pound boat. This car needs to lose 600+ pounds to be a real contender.

If you read Car and Driver's VIR lapping sessions, their complaints were always heat soak related power loss with the supercharged motor and the poor handling due to excessive weight on the front.

Id bet a lightly modified Boss 302 would post better track times than this new car.

In the world of Mustangs:

the GT350's and Boss 302's were for road racing.

The GT500's and Boss 429's were for drag racing.

Plain and simple. My guess is that with this GT500 the only track times that really matter, are the 1/4 mile track times.

that still doesn't explain skinny rear tires...

It really is. You can buy a used Benz SL55 AMG with 470HP now for $39 grand. No real need to buy a new car anymore lol.

peegeerep 03-20-2011 10:34 PM

will be a sick car

JSS 03-20-2011 11:15 PM

and doing a burn out. :fullofwin:

ivys2k 03-20-2011 11:32 PM

One thing they need to do is to put on some wide tires in the back or else its not gonna get grip. It doesnt matter if there is an increase in power. If the car has no grip it will never hit the numbers they want.

Antwon 03-21-2011 07:44 AM

Wow, that gives me an idea for my boat color scheme

yeah I'm quite surprised about that...because I'm sure engineers are smart to know about this.
