China's version of Google Maps? In Pixel Art

Saw this on twitter

China's search engine Baidu recreated some its cities in pixel art

With the amount of new construction going on in China, making this map is sure to keep someone busy.

FerrariEnzo 03-20-2011 10:48 PM

Nostalgia'd hard. That game was badass

I think this type of art is called isometric? There a local artist called eboy who does this stype of stuff.

I remember I was able to build a city so big it filled the entire land... man. Those were good times...

BNR32_Coupe 03-21-2011 06:54 PM

i'm a little slow: what's the benefit of this over conventional 3d mapping methods?

SkinnyPupp 03-21-2011 07:08 PM

It's pretty beautiful, but totally impractical. Google Maps is just getting more and more robust - look at the latest Android version which has 3D building mode, multitouch rotation, etc.

Baidu Maps is just a toy. Google maps is a useful tool.

that makes sense, they're concerned about the strategic impact of releasing infrastructure information to the world. the US still has some of the most sophisticated satellites out there, capable of capturing ground images anywhere on the planet with detail of about 3 meters though.

china's getting awful methodical with their military strategies. almost seems like they're a bit paranoid. i dont understand why though.. not like the world would ever go to war against china, the world needs them.

There are a few advantages to using hand-drawn maps over the traditional satellite images. First, there are no people nor cars, protecting the privacy of citizens. This means Baidu can dedicate more time to recreating other cities instead of blurring out faces and license plates. Secondly, because art is controlled, Baidu can filter out things such as garbage, graffiti, etc, all of which are not present on the map. This helps promote the cleanliness and image of the cities. And lastly, it just looks plain awesome!
