some quick questions about box2 inspections

got stoped at a road check tonight, officer did a full on check over of my car, and nailed me for my e-brake not working. box2 inspection. so i got 30days.

things im worried about
- welded diff
- zip ties holding front bumper to fenders
- no rear bumper cover
- no carpet or drivers door card(i could put it back in, but i am in the middle of fixing leaks)
- fiber glass rear fenders (not done yet, need a couple more days to finnish)
- exhaust that rattles
- head light motors dont work, lights are up all the time
- 1"x1" rust hole in drivers floor.
- lowering springs i think, (its not that low, and there not cut)
- no rear seats or carpet

what are some good shops to take my car too. i dont want to get the car inspected twice.

sounds like the car is almost ready for the wreckers.

as for the good,
- shocks are mint
- frame isnt rusty
- all glass is good
- motor runs great
- brakes are mint
- dash is mint
- all lights work
- working horn
- even has a good headliner

it's gonna cost more than what the car is worth

atb 03-20-2011 11:09 PM

cost isnt realy a problem, its just a hassle if im going to have to go put the rear seats back in, ect.

anyone have experience with vi's, what kinda stuff are shops looking for.

the things that will fail the inspection are as follows:

- zip ties holding front bumper to fenders
- no rear bumper cover
- 1"x1" rust hole in drivers floor

everything else is just cosmetic and does not affect the safety of the vehicle. therefore, things like no interior panels/seats will pass. your lowering springs are probably within the legal limit. headlights up is ok, as long as your lights are working. welded diff, the inspection shop won't know (probably).

well that doesnt sound too bad. its should only take me an hour to fix the drivers floor.

then i need a rear bumper skin. any shops around that carry ae86 bumper covers. not like the stock 3 peice usdm ones, it would work better with one that wraps around the sides.

you won't fail for having zip ties holding the bumper to the fender if that's NOT the only thing holding the bumper onto the car either.

But you will fail for having 1 seat in the car if your regi actually says the car sits 4. Some regis have that some don't.

Also you won't pass with no rear bumper cover because there's sharp edges sticking out of your car technically speaking,

the right rear fender must be covered prior to entering inspection too, because it's deemed as "rusting metal extruding from the outer perimeter of the car" if you don't.

i am not sure abt the law.. so dun quote me on this...
but my friend passed his 240SX VI with only 1 seat.. so I wouldnt tell OP to worry abt the seat... this was like last year winter so its pretty recent...

hk20000 03-21-2011 06:11 AM

like I said, it depends if it says seating capacity: 4 on the regi.

for some reason some cars' registration has that, some don't. Most are just blank in that line. For commercial vehicles it's insurance policy, like Lordco cars are insured against one driver only and the passenger seat is not to be occupied. Probably something to do with WCB.

Also not having a door card can lead to sharp metal edges inside cabin fail as well.

Your inspection is pretty much like a forced on OOP, so read through what they are going to look at and see if you find any fails yourself first.

Phil@rise 03-21-2011 09:37 AM

No need to worry about the seats make sure there is no exposed springs in your existing ones. If there is put seat covers on it. If the zip ties for the bumper are "cosmetic" then don't worry about that but if the inspector removes the zip ties and the bumper skin falls off then thats a fail. The rear bumper skin is a fail. Any sharp edges or rust holes fail.
Theres a whole slew of other things that inspectors look at like posted above and some inspectors will let a couple minor infractions by but some are real sticklers as their reputation and license is on the line with it.

baggdis300 03-21-2011 10:06 AM

no shop that wants to keep there license will pass that car in its current condition.

now if the car was complete and LOOKED like it was in good shape then it would be a lot easier for the shop to "over look" a couple defects.
