Removing Dirt in Wheel Well
 

Hey Revsceners,

So i've decided to take on a small project to clean the spots that have been collecting the most dirt in my car to avoid any rust issues. (i removed my sideskirts and noticed a considerable amount of dirt being collected in the sideskirts!

I noticed that I was starting to form some rust in my rear drivers' side wheel well, which is known for 240sx's to have this issue.

I'm planning to remove the wheels, wash the inside lining, spray it with any rust prevention, and put the wheels back on the car.

however, I noticed that today, there has been lots of dirt hiding away in the edge of the fender, where the metal curves up. As a result. rust as started showing so i'm sanding it down, but need to address the accumulated dirt as well.... How do I clean this? Note, i'm not the best illustrator, but heres an image! KILL IT!

I did the exact same thing to my Datsun last year. Take off the wheel mix up some Palmolive dish soap and get in the wheel well with a flash light and have it at. It sucks and you'll be as dirty as hell but if you're doing some rust proofing, you only have to do it once.

After than, every time you wash you car wrap a rag around your fingers and run ur fingers up and down that slot to get all the crap out. (unless your car is so low you can't even get a finger between the rubber and the arches...

we have the same problem on civics. here's what i suggest:

1. raise car up with a jack (wheel removal isn't necessary, you just need clearance to get to that spot)

2. remove rubber lining (if you have it)

3. use a hose and aim it towards yourself but inside the wheel well (duh lol)

4. use an old toothbrush to clear everything out. this is optional, i usually just use my fingers and rinse it off.

Take off the fender lining.
ALOT of it gets stuck on the bottom rear section of the fender where it meets the door/Rocker.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's rust there.

And since you're in behind that area.
Get some of this from Lordco.

And lightly sand that area down, and put the POR15 around that area.
240 Rockers rust easily. Saves you the headache from having to do it again later on.

fingers prone to some serious cuts by doing that, i know :whistle:

plus, i'm merely loosening the dirt build up, not swiping my fingers clear across the edge.

OP. If you're going to use POR-15, here is a tip for yeah.

The cheapest size can is almost 50 bucks or so without any of the prep and cleaning chemicals. Go to lordco and ask to see the Por-15 cataloge. Inside there is a "test" kit / Sample kit. It's only 20 bucks and it comes with the POR-15, The Marine Cleaner, Metal prep cleaner, gloves and brushes. You can actually paint a lot of service area with that little can.

Save your self some money, bro.

^^ Good info, Think i will check that test kit tomorrow. I am going to be doing a new motor and alot of suspension work on my car and since its a Nissan from 1985 it is in danger of having alot of rust. Its Very clean for its age and i just want to keep it that way ;)

Any tips or tiny mods that can be done as a prevention rather than maintenance?

POR15.

Por15 is good stuff.

I got some Por-15 yesterday. After I sand down the rust down to bare metal (It's gonna take a while, lol) i'm gonna slap on some por-15!

And as for using my finger, I can't stick my finger in there, it's not small enough to get into the grooves. I'd have to use a clothing hanger or something to get at the dirt inside

You know you have to prep the metal first before the POR-15, right?
That's why the kit has a leaner, a metal prep then POR-15.
