OMNI Censoring Simpsons Episodes dealing with Nuclear themes...

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - In response to the reactor disaster at Fukushima, OMNI is pulling some episodes of The Simpsons. The network is concerned the shows may be inappropriate and won't air any episodes that deal with a nuclear theme.

But devoted fans say the only inappropriate part of this story is messing with a 22-year-old cartoon satire. Even the least of likely fans think pulling the show is a knee-jerk reaction. "I believe maybe it's going a little too far. I understand what they're trying to say, but at the same time, it's carrying it too far," says one man.

"If you start censoring something that been around for a long time... there's so many shows that are over the top about every topic. Political correctness is just incorrect... to be politically incorrect today."

The Canadian broadcaster is not the first to pull Simpsons re-runs in light of Fukushima. A European network is not airing two episodes that deal with nuclear meltdowns.

From their own website,
Quote:

OMNI Television is licensed as a multilingual/multicultural broadcaster. A key condition of our licence is that we must air the majority of programming in a minimum number of languages to no less than a specific number of ethnocultural communities. This is why you will frequently hear us say that OMNI’s programming is both reflective of, and responsive to, the various diverse communities that we serve.
They cater to the asian community in their regions, and as such thought it was respectable to pull the episodes, similar to what they did in the 2000's with the New York episodes. They pulled the Twin tower shows for many years after 9/11.

Do I like this?
Nope.

I'm with the guy who said this.

Considering the VAST NUMBER of episodes, and the fact that nobody ever plays the reruns in order, would anyone even notice if they just quietly omitted those episodes without saying anything about it?

Fuck the nanny state, this is just some clowns saying, "Hey, look at us, we're doing a Good Thing<tm>!"

Edit: and technically, they're not "censoring" anything... they're just not playing certain episodes.

Plus, as a private broadcaster, it's entirely their decision to play - or not play - whatever shows or episodes they want. That's not censorship.

ChannelM didn't come into existence until 2003, not sure when they started buying Simpsons episodes to air though...

anyhow Omni is owned by Rogers

I know people say the world trade centre episode was pulled for many years... but i don't know about that... maybe its because I saw it so often that it doesn't seem like it was ever off air (the episode) or maybe some stations aired it and some didn't or something...

and i agree they should have just pulled the episodes discretely instead of making an announcement... no1 would have noticed but i guess the wanted to be noticed

Correct.
My point wasn't that Omni pulled those episodes, it was EVERYONE who pulled them. In fact, they weren't included in the "Simpsons" package that is purchased by the TV station. They buy a season to play, like Omni did. They also have the option to buy the special episodes, like Halloween and Xmas, but that's not important. What is important, is that from 2001 until 2006 (iirc) Fox, who owns the Simpsons removed those episodes from the package. They only existed on the store bought DVD, which aren't allowed on air.

That's what I thought too. The only reason I know this is because I've seen up to season 13 on DVD, and watched with the commentary turned on. There's some fascinating things you can learn from the DVD commentary, like back in the 90's you could almost get away with showing titties on TV. When GWB came into power he put a stop to it, and cost Fox a fortune in fines for breaking the rules.
