Movie Extra

Just wondering if any RS members have been an extra in movies and how/what is the process to get into this?

Gotta find a talent or extra agency.. Ton in Vancouver.

Long hours of nothing but standing around, and I think $10/hr?

I did some movie extra work 8-9 years ago as a side job, really fun to see behind the scenes and meet some stars.
Got discovered by some talent scouts since they were looking for specific built, ethnicity, height and just overall look.

Worked on many movies such as Blade Trinity (met triple H), Scooby Doo, Spymate (met Mr. Miyagi), and few others.
Even got my car in one movie too... Got paid more too.

If you wanna get into movie extras, check online for scouting companies. Browse around and ask questions on how much they offer and how often they get casting calls from different movie organizers. Expect late hours, i worked late til 5am at a casino shoot while filming Blade, still fun cause we were all chatting with Triple H.
Food/ lunch or dinner is covered but you'll have to wait til movie staff has eaten before you can get food.
Meet fellow extras where networking helps.

Good luck!

buddy of mine heard an add for an open casting call for Battlestar Gallactica when it was filming in town for the series finale. He likes to rub it in because I love that show and he had never even watched it before and I didn't bother to apply. He went on to play a 'mexican commando' in the A Team movie and then played an afghan soldier in Afghan Luke (yet to be released). He just gets calls whenever there are projects filming in the area. I don't think you can have any speaking lines unless you join an acting union which requires paying dues.

Did stunt work in Scarlet Letter. They arrived in town, set up an office and did a casting call. Got interviewed and then called back. 3 days work and got extra pay because of firearms/military/police background. Got to fire some matchlock muskets and do some drill for my fellow "soldiers". Spent an entire day running thru a river dragging people that we later executed. Lots of rehersal, lots of waiting, excellent food and a modest paycheque...in cash. You will normally get paid per hour for basic and then extra for specialized skills. Don't quit your day job. BTW Demi Moore without makeup...you wouldn't give her a second glance.

Have to find a good agency.
It involves long hours at around $10 hr. Unless you get union work.
Ask around to see who is happy with their agency.

was an extra in the movie valentine when i was a kid and made $200 for a day of work, when i was like 14 it was pretty good i thought

FerrariEnzo 04-02-2011 05:30 PM

so do you get paid for just waiting for your part or only during actual filming?

vafanculo 04-02-2011 05:38 PM

For every minute you are there.. Including OT and double OT

Get paid for the whole time you are there.

invader 04-02-2011 06:05 PM

so, what agency do you guys recommend going through? I want to do this a couple times just for experiencing something new

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2061283/

I get residuals too

StylinRed 04-02-2011 08:02 PM

friend does this all the time, less now that he's a realtor, but long long hours good food lots of Ho's and @ times the stars might come hang out with you; he got to meet and hang out with Ben Stiller during Night of the Museum 2 apparently Stiller would come and entertain the extras

good pay too for doing nothing and the pay like doubles if you're face gets shown (supposedly its usually blurred out???)

Stormspirit 04-02-2011 08:25 PM

My wife used to do extra work all the time. The only thing I remember her complaining about was standing around for hours on end while not filming. She's met a handful of stars and used to hang with Evangeline Lilly all the time as they'd always get called out for the same shoots. Obviously that was before Evangeline got noticed and ended up on Lost.

She's been in:

White Chicks
Miracle
I Spy
House
Smallville

Bunch more too, thats all I can remember off the top of my head.

The people at her agency seemed kinda shady to me, but they did get her regular work so what do I know lol... were right across from Metrotown.

FerrariEnzo 04-03-2011 07:10 PM

^^ name of that agency?
did you rip her off on her pay? whats her avg cheque/hrs?, if you dont mind me asking

punkwax 04-05-2011 12:23 PM

She thinks it was Hollywood North... been quite a few years so she can't remember how much she was paid per hour either..

Tegra_Devil 04-05-2011 02:42 PM

that would be fun to do in my off time :)
