Why wouldn't you be able to take any chances? At that point you're talking about being able to 'backup' your consciousness in a computer and extensive use of cybernetics and bioreplacement of organs.

You'd be able to experience death and then wake up from it.

That said even that would get kinda boring after a while.

my fear, would be how evil(murderers, terrorists, presidents, etc) would be able to have a backup their consciousness.....if you cannot kill someone, would the world slowly turn evil, unless 'the computer' decided that it was unacceptable to have this occur, or would it think of it as population control?

the Patent system works worldwide.

That's why Patent takes forever(5+ years), they check different countries/different offices all over the world before they get the patent.

Patents are registered in individual countries. A patent can be granted in one country but not another. The delay is generally at each individual country. Under the patent convention treaty though you can claim priority in advance for other member countries.

As technology moves foward and everyone is facetiming on their iphones just like startrek, or are driving cutting edege performance / electric cars, you'll always find some hippy people riding their bikes and only buy full organic foods. I for one am all in for technology, down with bike lanes!

You guys will swallow up anything..
Thinking outside the box is encouraged, but please, don't be so open-minded as to have your brains fall out.

You cannot create self awareness. Life, as miserable or amazing as it can be, is, after everything is said and done... very very very complicated.. and one thing in this universe that is very unique.
Are computers smarter than us? No. They are not.
Faster does not equal smarter.
In fact, compared to a human, a computer is incredibly retarded.

You can create a computer that can judge the difference from A and B. To then make a billion different and random actions and perform them, but they're still programmed to do this by a human..meaning they do not have free will. The large amount of different actions a computer might execute each time only gives the Illusion that it is making a conscious choice, but in reality it is merely following a pattern designed by its creator.

You can mimic emotions too. Make it so that a computer reacts with action A,B,C,D,E,F,G to event 1,2,3,4 or etc.. and it will give the illusion that it is making a conscious decision, but again, it is merely following a pattern that was implemented in it's program.
It will NEVER become self aware... why? Because we don't know what life is, we can't give life , you can play around with the way it comes about, but we will never know HOW it comes about, what gives it a conscience and etc.

Speed != Intelligence

We can already play around with brain signals that our brains fire off when we're thinking about an action. For example if you think about moving your arm, you can record the events that occur in your brain and have them talk to a computer, and have that computer perform tasks using real life objects.
There are many possibilities but one that will NEVER be in reach is the ability to create consciousness.

Don't get me wrong, it's a very interesting thread and article, but in the end, it's wrong in it's assumption that AI can evolve into RI.
