Coles notes:

article states that crime stats are going down, yet many citizens want to get "Tougher on crime".

How many citizens actually feel pretty safe in Canada. Most are not afraid to walk alone etc.

Talks about Costs and policies etc. also increase in technology to help combat and report crimes.

Even though crime stats are currently going down, I feel that our criminal justice system definitely needs to get a lot tougher on crime; more specifically the sentencing aspects.

It's kind of ridiculous how lenient our judicial courts are with handing out sentences. The court seems to me to be more interested protecting/not infringing on the rights of the offender, rather then protecting the public. With that being said, it's completely ludicrous to hear how after more than 30 convictions, many offenders are actually getting lesser, more lenient sentences. Also, some aspects of our criminal justice system needs to be changed. For example, how we deal with our youth offenders. In my opinion, it's too lenient. Yes I know teenagers are young and make mistakes, but for there are some youths that commit more serious crimes and use this as an excuse to get more lenient sentences. Again, because of the rights of the offender and the feeling that youths make stupid mistakes, I feel that Judges have those thoughts in mind when handing out sentences. And as a result of this, some teenagers do literally get away with murder.

I would agree, I think for serious crimes (Murder etc) and multiple offenders should have more strict punishment.

But for the first time petty crime theive will just cost taxpayers way too much. For those types of offenders (first time petty crimes), they should force them into manual labour of some sort. Make them pay back to society.

I agree, with the petty crime and paying back society... It's called community service.

Getting tougher on crime might mean many things; longer sentences, but then who will foot the bill for all these prisons and their operating costs? Capital punishment, are we just going to start killing people, isolating them, can we morally do that? What about reform, I think some people can be rehabilitated/reprogrammed to what everyone thinks is normal. To the people that can't, well I guess the system would have to change till they do, or just put them to labour camps, there's plenty of dangerous jobs out there to be done.

the stats are going down because the public is not reporting the vehicle break-ins and such since they police never do anything about it. When my catalytic converter was stolen from under my truck I asked ICBC if I should report it to the RCMP and the adjuster straight up said to me you can if you want but they can't do anything about it. The place I took it to get it fixed even said they have had around 20 stolen in the past year and they said something to the police and they didnt care at all.

There is still the same amount of crime out there it's just not being reported since I personally feel the general public think/know the police won't do a single thing about it.

wow, this reminds me of a time when i called the abbotsford police to report that my car was broken into, they told me too bad, we don't care....

and hung up on me, and this was the non emergency #....

yet, when i was driving my monte carlo thru downtown abby, after DJin at the banquet hall around 12am i get pulled over by 5 marked police cars. now wtf is this BS? all for pulling into the petro canada to get some gas before hitting the highway, and theres a line of 5 police cars behind me....

"Tougher on crime" sounds great but I'm honestly not for it. Especially when they fold tougher punishments for non-violent and drug related offences in that. I'd rather see more focus on prevention, rehabilitation and community projects.

YES! I honestly think drug related offense is the main seed of crime in Vancouver. It leads to more addicts on the street, more petty crime, and occasionally crime where someone "accidentally" gets stabbed. There's also the people associated with distributing drugs -> gunning down people in broad daylight in a area with innocent people around.

they should do what the americans do, drugs + gun = double time...

here its like you get 1-2 years for having a loaded gun and drugs.... usually you'd be out in 6-12 months..

in the states its like minium 5-10 years just for having a loaded gun with drugs.
