question from the OP: so did you guys work part-time all the way until your full-time career? or did you guys stop work, and and wait out 2-3 years before the full-time career? because i've seen some pretty dramatic jumps in the type of work and salary from part-time job to full-time career...

ex. going from mcdicks straight to website designer or systems analyst...

That being said, some people jump into their career with no previous work experience whatsoever, so there is some leeway in that sense.

At what age did you guys get your first jobs? Also, some tips in finding jobs/getting hired? Still in my teens, but no job so far, unlucky or unwanted? Only thing i remember doing as a kid was newspaper delivery for a good year. Thanks

You are definetly NOT unwanted. Everyone has different talents/qualities they can bring to the workforce. Its a matter of finding what they are. Even for part-time jobs, there are many different industries: fast food, retail, fashion, office, etc, the list goes on. What I did was volunteer for things that I took an interest in, and went from there. Back in highschool, I had a program called work experience, where they give you 90 hours to work in a field you are interested in. I remember working for a physio clinic and at a concession stand for the olympics. Both gave me valuable work experience, and both were strong resume boosters because I never had a first job. The thing with volunteering is that, you can put it directly as work experience instead of volunteer, because it is in some form, a type of work experience. Volunteer is key if you never had a job before.

Another way is to walk in to stores and apply directly that way. There are many desperate employers out there that take applicants who have minimal work experience or even none at all. When handing that resume in in person, a good way to catch their attention and to set yourself apart from the others, is to strike a conversation with the management there, or even the employees (since they may be the ones handing your resume in to the management and if they think you make a good future potential coworker, they will want you to get in). But remember, the key to any job is confidence.

p.s. any work experience is work experience, so put WHATEVER you have, down on your resume. This includes the newspaper delivery job. Just make it sound a bit more prestigious if you wish, by putting down the company name. If the position doesn't impress the employer enough, the company name might override that. Big and well-known companies establish trust and reliability, and essentially, that is what any employer is looking for.

Thanks a lot for the advice, instantneedles. One other question, at what age should i be okay to apply for almost any job? eg airport

Try applying during their holiday rush seasons (i.e. pre-back to school or pre-Christmas time periods).

-Got my first "real" job @ age 20; worked retail.
-If you're trying to land a retail job, give as much availability as possible when you're filling in the form. Think about it this way: why would a store hire anyone who isn't willing to work more than a weekend per week? Managers have a store to run and your life isn't their top priority (though you might encounter some good ones and they don't mind working with you on your schedule).
-In all the jobs that I had, I think my retail job taught me the most. It helped that the crew there I was with were excellent people (I am still close friends with them years after I left the store).

In chronological order:
0) Tutored younger kids
***after high school***
1) Staples
2) Help Desk at a local university
***after graduation***
3) Electronics company (trainer and team lead in the Olympics)
4) SME (software)
5) Technical Writer (software)
