Finding a Part-Time Job
 

Hi,

I am a university student who desperately needs a part-time job to finance my studies. Could anyone recommend me to some good entry-level jobs? I don't really qualify for those requiring experience.

^I am graduating this May, sent out more than a dozen of applications. I have volunter and work experiences that are all related to the positions I am applying for. Full-time,Part-time, summer short-term, summer full-time,etc. Still, NOTHING.

There are so many jobs looking for "returning students", so I am offically out....

gear your coverletter towards the position...i find it yields better results
thankfully i got two interviews lined up next week.

^I have included coverletters for all my applications, even when they did not ask for one.

A professional staff at the University helped me check my coverletters too...

your resume is probably fobbish, and you have poor communication skills if you are having that much difficulty finding a job.

^of course my resumes have been checked by the career staff at the University.

Actually, the application deadlines have not expired yet , so I am still waiting for them to contact me :troll:

Is it too late for you to join the co-op program? If you're entering your 3rd year in the fall, you might still be able to join your faculty's program.

Or, if you're desperate for cash, you could swallow your pride and work retail or at a coffee shop.

You could always work at a private liquor store. The job is easy (stocking and cash) and most stores pay at least $10/hour. Plus, it's easy to sell liquor. In terms of other retail, I shop at Winners quite frequently and I always see job applications at the entrance. I'm sure they pay at least 8.5-10/hour.

There's a newer Starbucks in my neighbourhood that hired a bald and fat white guy, so all is not lost for someone young (with what sounds like little work experience) like yourself.

You've probably tried this already, but have you tried asking your previous references if they know of any jobs available? Or if you know a friend's workplace is hiring?

Are you looking for a professional type entry level kind of job? or just ANY kind? be specific. If you don't mind doing like retail etc, home depot would be one of the better choices out there because they reimburse 50% of your tuition.

Any entry job would be delightful!

Sorry, it really has to be said. If you can't find an entry level job, you're really not looking hard enough.

There are tons and tons of entry level work out there. TONS.

If you are looking to applying for a bank (say for a teller or whatever). I've been told to not be afraid to go to your local branch, and actually go to the tellers. Give them a quick ask to see if they are currently hiring. You don't have to be all dressed up like you are a baw$$, but at least be sensual and not wear a big FCUK sweater or something

Asking never hurts.
Oh yes and references, ask around your friends... see who's hiring!

and if you guys really want, Federal government jobs are awesome (though you don't really go anywhere)

The problem is that SO MANY require prior experience (which I barely have any). Like 90% of the retail jobs require 1 or 2 years of experience.

Don't worry too much about the experience requirement, especially for retail jobs. You just need to send out applications and resumes to as many places as you can; eventually, something will stick.

theres tons of stuff in there. There should be an influx of employment opportunities in the up coming weeks due to government grants to create summer jobs.

Like Tapioca said, dont worry about the experiences, lots of jobs put it up but will hire someone with no experience if they deem them the right fit for their company.
