How to decide between jobs

I need some advice.

Last week 2 internal positions opened up in my company. I applied for both, and i met up with managemgent to discuss both of them. I told them i prefered one of them, but they met up with me today basically saying they want me to take the other one. I asked if i turn it down, will i get the one i originally wanted? They said they cant guarantee it because they have a couple more internal people to interview. the one they want me to take has more potential for pay since it is more senior, but i have reasons why i would want the other one. I have till tomorrow morning to let them know if i accept their offer or not.

Thoughts? tia

It boils down to how much of your work/life balance is compromised and whether the new positions will really get you somewhere internally or not.

If I were offered a "senior" job posting in my company for an extra $10,000 but expected to put in an extra 2 or 3 hours every day of my work week and/or weekends, with nowhere to go afterwards, then forget it. I'm better off where I am now.

Then again, some people love a fancy title. For me - FTS.

perform a pro/con analysis of both jobs.

Work/life balance wouldnt be compromised and both would get me where i want to go.the one they want me to take is harder to fill, but i guess im qualified. both have a very different focus, which is why i prefer one to the other.

i did the pros/cons and decided on the one that i want.

its tough because if i turned down the offered one, and dont get the one i want, i would be in the same place.

unfortunately no receptionist

Is there a chance later on to get the one that you want? Right now if you're trying to get ahead I'd go with the guaranteed position to make management happy

They seem to be actively discouraging you from taking the other position. To me that reads "You're not likely to get it". So I would agree.

If the position they want me to take wasnt open, i would probably get the one i want, but the one they want me to take requires a specific skill set which is hard to find, which is not in the direction i want to go long term.

the problem with accepting a position that is difficult to fill is that if you are effective within it, they'll never want to replace you... meaning you might lose out on other opportunities down the road, again.
