Summer Job for High School Student
 

I am looking for a summer job this year to get enough money for my first car. Anyone know a place that would be hiring for part time/full time for the summer. I am almost 17 years old and I have 2 years work experience as a timekeeper at 8 rinks. I live in Burnaby so it would be better the closer it is. Any suggestions on where I should apply? Thanks.

What kind of "first car" are you looking for?
a) a $3000 used Civic?
b) a $25000 brand new Fit?
c) a $180 000 Matte R8?

Hopefully your answer is somewhere along the lines of A) Cause with the
amount of work experience you have, there's no way a high school student
could work for 2 months in the summer, and be able to afford a brand new car.....

Not sure if you're over 18, and it might be bit late...but you could apply at:
- Census 2011
- McDonalds
- There will be lots of employment fairs in the upcoming months,
try to attend a few of those. Lots of times, there are entry positions available.

^:lol r8.. its possible to get $3000 if you work full time. but thats if you can even find a full time job cause theres plenty of high school students applying for jobs. i recommend a restaurant of some sort because you get tips alongside your hourly wage. judging by your username, youre grade 11 so apply at fast food franchises. dont just give your resume to one restaurant tho, print like 15 and give them everywhere. i dont think it would be easy for you to find a job at retail clothing stores though.

ya you should start applying everywhere now if you havent been already. I'm sure once high school gets out for summer all the students will be looking for jobs so get an early start. If you know how to speak chinese, t&t you can get a job there for sure. I had no experience and i submitted my resume that had nothing on it besides me graduating high school and the guy called me and i didnt even have to go in for an interview, i was hired lol.

i think you have to face a bit of reality: you can very likely earn enough to buy a car (something around $3000), but you have to realize that buying a car is not just buying a car and driving it around. factor in gas, insurance, and maintenance. without a steady income (at least of a few hundred bucks a month), you won't be able to afford it

your choices are to either find a part time job that you'll stick with throughout grade 12 (i worked at sportchek when i was in highschool, basically from 3-9 on like 2 weekdays and then 2 weekends, earned me decent cash), or ditch the idea of buying a car. unless you want to work full time for the next 2 months, buy a car, and then just have it sit in your driveway uninsured? not sure why you would want to do that though

If you want fast cash, borrow your parent's car and work at a Pizza place, mnimum $17 bucks an hour and topping out at almost $30 per hour including wages, tips, and fuel surcharge. It's good for short term though.

If you have a beater kicking around, then that's a bonus.

Well, my current job as a timekeeper gives me decent money and I already have over $3000 saved up. In the summer there isn't a lot of shifts as hockey season isn't big in the summer ovs. The pizza delivery job sounds pretty good for short term but I can't get my N till the end of July. I think I may try for a job at a restaurant as a entry level position such as dishwasher. If that doesn't work out then I'll go retail. As for buying my car, I'm looking to get an Eclipse GSX, around 6k or something. I probably wont get it till sometime at the end of the year if that.

Honestly getting a car now isn't really logical unless you have parent support or support. If you are paying everything by yourself, the car is a one pay thing if you're buying a used vehicle, but the insurance and the gas will still be somewhat a lot. Especially when you are an N driver and the insurance in under your name. Even if it's under your parents it can still cost thousands each year.

If you're really into getting a car, one thing you gotta be ready is burning a chunk of your paycheck into it for sure.

yeah i agree.. if you don't have the parent support, there's no way you can do it unless you can get past yourself with the knowledge that if you do decide to fund for a car, you won't have cash left over to hang out with friends, shopping, etc. And if you're a noob driver, there'll be the occasion where you crash and shit, and right there, you're gonna have to cough up another few grand. It's not worth it trust me. I know its hard to deal with the fact that alot of your friends are probably gonna be driving 60-70 grand cars. However, it doesn't mean you're less hardworking, less wealthy as they are. It just means that they're spoiled and need their parents to pay for them to pick up chicks. Wait it off, finish university, get a good job, earn your own money and buy your own car. You'll feel alot more accomplished that way.

Warehouse or labour work is good. You get paid a lot more than working at McD and you get to work out while making money.

If you really want money I would say get 2 pt jobs one in the morning and one at night it will keep you busy and you won't have time to spend your money.

Thanks everyone. I know that buying a car is going to suck up all my money, but this has been stuck in my mind ever since I could remember. Does anyone know a good website with job posting for entry level jobs. The ones that I have been too have not been any help at all.

I would just go into a mall and ask stores for job application forms/postings. But man, I could never imagine undergoing the stress of owning a car while I'm still in highschool. Gas, maintenance and insurance will kill you.

Pretty much. Just check out the mall websites and look for stores that are looking to hire. It's May and now is the perfect time for malls to hire summer temps.

Do you excel at sports? Community centers have sport camps such as basketball and tennis. You could be a coach/trainer at community center for kids. I remember when I was a basketball coach during my teenage years. $15/hour and it was awesome teaching kids how to play basketball during the summer.

Save up some money and take her and her single friends on a limo. You'll get further than most of your friends. I'm sure you'll get some bonus points too from her friends.

Eclipse + gas + insurance is cool but what about the after party? Where is the cash for that? Not a good way to impress the date ;)

ya man....note one thing....you want to buy an Eclipse GSX right??.....your insurance will be sky rocket......Eclipse = sport car (ranked as a sport car with ICBC)..... you = N driver.....sport car + N driver = high premiums and rates (rough guess, but i think it will cost $2700+ per year)....and without a steady cash flow....you'll just end up with a really big paper weight to look at afterwards until you are done school and etc. so you really gotta think thru it before buying any car.

but i agree with everyone here.....get 2 jobs....constant cash flow....or do what i did....have 2 full time jobs.....one in the morning and one at night....

day job....look for dealerships....wash boy/lot boy and etc...playland always hiring...and they pay decent
night job....fast food joints or BBT places

if u have 3g's now.. and u want a 6g car.. after insurance and everything ur gona need to save like 6g's in two months MINIMUM..

i would say just drive ur parents car if possible..

all that time u spend at work after school.. u could be hanging out with girls LOL

another alternative is, if you really are that desperate for a car, buy the car, then pay for the insurance for what money you have left. Then leave your car stalling, and pay insurance again once you got the bills. but i'd really rather you not do this. Just save up the cash from you part time jobs, so that when you graduate, and get a full time job, you can buy a really nice car, and be able to support it.

Try looking on craigslist under the skilled trade/craft section. There's postings for labourers there, I'm sure some companies would be willing to hire a green guy for the summer to do some of the grunt work.

a car is a depriciating asset regardless of a persons ability make all related payments.

might as well put some words of encouragement...........i guess i can say this everyone that too....Altoids94....please don't take offense of our comments in this thread.....we are not trying to turn you down on buying a car or saying you can't do it.....we are just giving you advice on how to approach on buying your first car....heck...i bet everyone posted on this thread had the same phase as you are having now...wanting to buy a car first thing after getting the N.....but crashed and burned after buying the car cos we didn't know the cost of the other stuff/things after buying the car.....i know i did.....worked like a dog and didn't even had time for friends and etc....sucked balls big time....but good job for you for wanting to buy a car....it's good to always have an achievement to work on...it's a great feeling when you buy stuff with your the money you earned with blood, sweat and tears......what you should really do is...work this summer and enjoy your time with friends...still young....save up....and buy a car next summer....by then i bet you have a huge chunk of money saved up and you can have and enjoy a better summer with your ride =)
