Interesting pictures from nuclear testing

Quote:

Since the time of Trinity -- the first nuclear explosion in 1945 -- nearly 2,000 nuclear tests have been performed, with the majority taking place during the 1960s and 1970s. When the technology was new, tests were frequent and often spectacular, and led to the development of newer, more deadly weapons. But starting in the 1990s, there have been efforts to limit the future testing of nuclear weapons, including a U.S. moratorium and a U.N. comprehensive test ban treaty. As a result, testing has slowed -- though not halted -- and there are questions about the future. Who will take over for those experienced engineers who are now near retirement, and should we act as stewards with our enormous stockpiles of nuclear weapons? Gathered here are images from the first 30 years of nuclear testing

They blew up a lot of these suckers in the 50s and 60s!

Gumby 05-07-2011 09:14 PM

Holy fuck... As hard as these pictures try, it's difficult to imagine the destructive power of a nuke.

Amazing pictures! What I've always had a hard time trying to grasp in previous Abomb detonations pictures is the sheer size of the explosions, due to the fact that there were no reference points to compare them to. You just knew the fire balls were huge.

I recently watched a documentary on the History Channel about nuke testing in the Marshall Islands on Bikini Atoll. Real eye opener how many people were lied to and died and homes destroyed to facilitate testing.

They forgot to cloak the cannon.

The Tsar Bomba. The most powerful bomb ever exploded, the equivalent of 50 megatons.

I was expecting the caption for this to be
"Earth, as viewed from the moon, during the detonation of a nuclear bomb."

Wow the US sure likes to blow shit up.

That's 1.62 a month for 53 years.... and you wonder why they're 14 Trillion dollars in debt. They might as well have a big bonfire every month and throw money into it.
