Painting Wheels Duplicolour...
 

So, ive decided to paint my rims a graphite grey from its original silver finish. I have completely sanded the rims down to a uniform texture.

My first step is to prime the rims with primer, and now im just stuck on this type of primer to use. I noticed the Self Etching Primer and the Sandable primer by duplicolour. Im unsure of which primer would help adhesion and provide the best finish that will last.

I was considering putting a layer of self etch then a layer of sandable primer on as the second coat, will this cause any adhesion problems for the paint.

Ive also seen a product called Adhesion Promoter, would i need any of this?

Any advice would help me out.

also interested in this, what did you use to sand your wheels? by hand or a sander? also did you remove tires?

I painted my rims last summer and the primer I used was the sandable one I believe. However, it was a grey primer and the finished product turned out a bit darker than I expected. I think the self etching primer will be fine to use. Unless the sandable primer you have is white. I also painted graphite grey.

Oh yeah and the most important thing, remember to do multiple light coats over very wet ones!

If you didn't sand it down to bare metal, you don't really need to use Primer
thats what the Duplicolor tutorial says online

I've painted 4 sets of rims with the Duplicolor Wheel paint and I've justed used the cheapest primer, I believe it was Sandable
with no problems

Note: if you are painting them white (I know OP isn't)
Do not clear coat them, the Duplicolor Wheel Paint clear coat will yellow

ugh yellow clear coat would be a nightmare. Thanks for the heads up. Im going to go with my original plan of sandable duplicolour primer with graphite.

ive opted to use VHT caliper clear coat rather than the duplicolour clear coat. I am also going to add a coat of adhesion promoter underneath the first coating of primer and paint.

Is that the graphite? It came out great, wow. Did u use the duplicolour clear coat? Any noticable yellowing?

How many cans of each paint did u use with regards to how many coats?

Wow that color does look great.

I painted my ugly oem wheels with duplicolour too and put winter tires on them. White w/ a red lip to test it out.

Sanded/scruffed up
2-3 coats of normal primer
3 coats of red
Mask up the lip
3 coats of white
3 coats of clear coat
Bake

If you're going to do a lip then make sure you mask it properly.. I didn't push down all the edges and some paint got through so it looked pretty nasty. Clear coat on white was fine when it came out.. then it got dirty and turned disgusting yellow. Thank god I don't have these on my car anymore..

The red for the lip was duplicolor paint but it wasn't for wheels, and it chipped really easily while the white duplicolor paint for wheels held up great.

Anyone know if it'll hold up okay without a clearcoat?

and just a little bit of clear,

nope no yellowing, but it feels rough, kinda like sandpaper

did you have to remove tires before sandblast or can you keep them on?

hmm my tires were still on when they blasted it.

it cost me $80 for 4 wheels

yep deffiently feels rough, and it gets dirty easy.

what feels rough? gets dirty easily with no clear?

If it feels rough and you have clear on you can wet sand the final coat of the clearcoat until it feels smooth. I don't think it's recommended to sand the final coat of paint itself though, but you can wetsand the previous coats of paint to make the finish smoother.

I baked them so the paint would settle better
