Upgrading mobo/cpu/ram Hey guys I'm looking to upgrade my CPU, mobo and probably ram. Current setup CPU: Intel E6550 Mobo: Asus P5K Ram: 2x Corsair CM2X2048-6400C5DHX (4GB total) I'm completely out of the loop in terms of mobo, cpu and ram nowadays. I'm looking at the AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition because it can be had at ~$112 right now. What's a good mobo & ram to go with it? I'm trying to keep the cost as low as possible without sacrificing performance (too much). |
785G chipset boards will be cheaper than 890 and they are virtually identical. So I'd go with an 785G board, should be around $50-60. |
Intel retail edge summer deal starts on the 25th. I dont need a new upgrade but if you want I can hook you up with one of the following for the value I get it at + the shipping cost + usd conversion ratio if your interested. (they didnt release the pricing but from the winter deal we got atleast 50% or more off) 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7 2600k Desktop Processor + Intel® Core™ i7 970 Desktop Processor + 120GB/160GB 3rd gen Intel SSD drives too Give me a PM if your interested |
I'm looking to upgrade my computer but I will be away all month in June. Do you think it is worth buying it with this intel summer deal and just keeping it on the backburner until July? I just feel it's kind of a waste (as things do get cheaper over time) but if it's at a ridiculous price then maybe I'd do it |
If it's 50% off like bakasam says, then absolutely it's worth buying at that discount! Prices drop, but not by that much! |
The winter deal was when the I7 970 was at like 800~900$ from ncix and I got it for like 300? approx 340~350 after shipping and whatnot. I'll let you guys know the pricing on the 25th. If its the same as the winter deal it can only be 1 CPU and 1 SSD but they change it every once in a while |
What's this winter deal you guys speak of? Sounds very tempting. |
If anyone would be willing to help me out with the Intel Retail Program then please kindly throw me a PM. I'll do all the work, just need someone from any of these retail stores so I can make an account: -Actionling -Apple -BCOM Computer Center - Best Buy (Canada) - Buy.com - Canada COmputers - CDW - Costco - Future Shop - Geek Squad - HP - HSN - Insight - Intel (lol) - London Drugs - MarketStand HP - MDG Computers Canada - Memory Express - Microbytes - Microsoft Store - Mosaic-HP - Ncix.com/Netlink Computers - Office Depot - PC Village - Radioshack - Rent-a-Center - Sam's Club - Sears - Sony - Sony factory outlet - Staples - Superior Computers - The Source - Tiger Direct - Wal-Mart (Canada) You would have to prove that you're an employee when you make an account though, through a paystub or something. Forgive me if this is thread-jacking, Cheers. |
Edit: RL friend decided to snag the CPU so if anyone is still looking im sure there are other RS members with retail edge membership so good luck. I still have the SSD which i need to hear back from a couple members |

But the summer deal is better even regular members can buy the products cept they are 10~15$ cheaper. The winter deal didnt have that lol |
Thanks for the offer bakasam! Too bad your friend picked up the i7 :p I picked up an AMD Phenom X4 II 955 Black Edition and I need a new cooler. The stock one on this thing blows like a fricken vacuum when I'm playing games. Can somebody recommend a good one from NCIX's weekly sale? I'm out of the loop with computers now and have no idea what is good / bad lol http://ncix.com/promo/promosale.php?webid=dadsgrads2011 |
That $15 cooler should actually be pretty quiet if the fan rarely reaches full speed. I'm not sure what retail cooler they included, but the 955 should actually be fairly quiet. Are you sure it's not the video card cooler that is loud when playing games? |

That sucks. Do you know how many you were allowed to buy? Only the one? |

Was going to go big and get the Noctua, but reviews on bit-tech showed that the Tranquillo and the Noctua weren't much different. Half the price for the same type of performance, more or less. |
