tips for becoming a lifeguard
 

Any of u had a job as a lifeguard in burnaby or vancouver before? Any tips you can share, on getting hired by a pool?

It's easier to get the job if you have double D's..

What I was trying to get at was...during the interviews, what worked well amd what didnt? Also, did you guys get experience teaching and guarding first, or did u guys just jump rite into the hiring process after u got ur certs?

Lifeguarding for the city is shit. Pays "well" but they have a union mentality, SENIORITY IS EVERYTHING. If you get in, expect to be teaching aquasize (fossil-fit) and other undesirable lessons. If your serious, be flexible and tell them you're up for everything.

My friend is a supervisor at one of the Vancouver pools.

His best advice, similar to MoBettah, is to be flexible and accommodating. Because it's a union, you have to start from the very bottom so you can't exactly pick and choose. The more qualifications and credentials you have (i.e. AquaFit instructor etc) the better your chances of being hired.

There's a lot of politics at the pool. If you can't play the game, then you'll either get intimidated and be forced to quit or you'll get less hours or your supervisor will give you shifts at any time regardless of you saying explicitly you can't beforehand. You'll have to become friends with the people at the pool, especially suck up to the supervisor, but how you act at the pool depends on the supervisor. Some just want you to do your job and not socialize. Some are racist. You'll be lucky to find a nice supervisor, but even if you do there's a lot of politics ahead of you. Pay's awesome though :)

There is a lot of politics.. from my experience at richmond pools.
Every IC (in charge aka supervisor) has their favorites. Become a favorite and bam you get shifts. Even shifts there are 'good' shifts and shitty shifts. Pay is good but seniority is everything.. if you aren't good at sucking dicks expect to have little to no shifts the first year you start and by the 2nd year you should have some shifts (3ish days a week).
