K&N filter oiling Hi I know this is in the wrong section, but I need a quick answer as I need to drive the car asap (shoulda thought ahead of time eh?) I just cleaned my K&N drop in air filter(not the cone) in my 240sx this morning, and it is now dry. I was just wondering if anyone knows if you spray the oil on both sides of the filter or just the side air comes in (dirty side). Thanks! PS: I have googled etc, but getting mixed answers everywhere |
spray the dirty side only edit: actually come to tjhink of it, i've only done cone filters, but you dont spray the inside of the cone, so i dont' see why you spray both sides of a panel filter |

http://www.knfilters.com/faq.htm#17 But other non K&N official sources also recommend one side so I guess I'll stick with that, heard its bad to overoil. |

Spray both sides. It will dry faster if you spray 3x light coats instead of 1 heavy coat. Remember, K&N's have bigger holes in between the filters. That's why they make more power; they let more air in. The oil is what fills the holes and catches particles. If you don't oil it properly, and let it dry properly, you will get more dust particles getting into your engine. |

Drying time depends on the ambient temperature and humidity and how much you've sprayed on. There's no way to give a solid answer to that question. Spray on a light coat, and wait until the wet oil turns waxy and hazy and dry. Touch and feel. It might be 5 min it might be 20+min. |
Brings up a good question though, how the hell are u suppose to oil the inside of a cone filter LOL |
you just have to remove it from the car. |

Well anyways, I let it dry through the whole canucks game and installed it back in. Though another small Q pops up, does anyone know if the air filter box cover seem is suppose to touch the other half of the box? I can't seem to get it to align perfectly and forgot to see if it was touching before I took it out. There seems to be a gasket sorta thing on the air filter so I drove with it not perfectly aligned (clips were in place for the box though). Didn't seem to have any problems though. |
SHIT! don't mean to thread jack but I have a K&N drop in oil filter and I didn't know you were suppose to spray oil on it. What kinda oil do you spray on it and where can you get it? Fuck lol I've almost driven it around all year now ==. I'm going in for an oil change soon and probably get that done as well. Thanks~ |
just google K&N recharge kit. It's like $10 and will keep ur filter last very long time. |

My K&N filter comes pre-oiled and after 3 months, it was pretty dry. |
The air filter should fit perfectly into it's groove. It should sit flush around all the edges. If you have it in crooked or not perfect, you risk sucking up debris into the engine. |
