Apple Settles patent dispute with Nokia

so some of you may not know but Nokia and Apple have had a patent war for a few years now

and its been back and forth with some findings in favour of apple but then reexamined etc etc

anyway Apple finally gave up and settled

they're giving Nokia a lump-sum + royalties (for every iphone sold and to be sold) the exact amount isn't known

its mainly regarding the GSM radios/network (nokia invented em)

Considering Nokias financial situation I imagine Apple likely got a deal because Nokia is looking to offset its coming losses

Apple payments to Nokia settle all litigation and have positive financial impact

Nokia Corporation
Stock exchange release
June 14, 2011 at 08:05 (CET +1)

Espoo, Finland – Nokia announced that it has signed a patent license agreement with Apple. The agreement will result in settlement of all patent litigation between the companies, including the withdrawal by Nokia and Apple of their respective complaints to the US International Trade Commission.

The financial structure of the agreement consists of a one-time payment payable by Apple and on-going royalties to be paid by Apple to Nokia for the term of the agreement. The specific terms of the contract are confidential.

“We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees,” said Stephen Elop, president and chief executive officer of Nokia. “This settlement demonstrates Nokia’s industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market.”

During the last two decades, Nokia has invested approximately EUR 43 billion in research and development and built one of the wireless industry’s strongest and broadest IPR portfolios, with over 10,000 patent families. Nokia is a world leader in the development of handheld device and mobile communications technologies, which is also demonstrated by Nokia’s strong patent position.

This agreement is expected to have a positive financial impact on Nokia’s recently revised outlook for the second quarter 2011 of around break-even non-IFRS operating margin for Devices & Services.

yeah

Reuters suspects nokia is getting either 1 or 2% of apple revenue and this year alone that's $43billion

Analysts said Nokia could be estimated to get between 1 and 2 percent of iPhone revenues, which are seen at around $43 billion this year according to a Reuters poll.

No, he got a fail because he cant read.

Nokia is going to get 1-2% of Apple's IPHONE revenue, not 1-2% of Apple's TOTAL revenue, which is what he posted.

Mark

StylinRed 06-14-2011 09:27 PM

naw mas604 is going through my posts and failing

and yeah of course its the iphone revenue.... why would it be anything else?
that's what the reuters thing says

other analysts i think it was wsj i cant find the link nemore

but they think the lump sum payment to nokia would be around 400-600milion US
and then the royalties

no one knows for sure though

but both companies shares rose today after the news

FerrariEnzo 06-14-2011 11:34 PM

heres an update!

$608 Million Up Front, ~$138 Million Per Quarter
http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/14/...kia-estimated/

holy cow..

StylinRed 06-15-2011 04:44 AM

those are all just guesses though as the actual amounts are sealed

if Nokia hadn't agreed to settle though its believed Apple would be lump-summing in the Billions but Nokia from the start had been pushing to end the matter quickly

FerrariEnzo 06-15-2011 05:35 AM

but $138 Million Per Quarter for as long as Apple sells iPhone is ALOT of money.. $600+mil every year... thats profit right there..
