What would have made the most sense in a simple swap was to switch Nashville with Winnipeg. Nashville takes the spot in the Southeast and Winnipeg goes to the Central. Of course this was never in the league's plans since Detroit has been lobbying for a move to east for years.

Many earlier scenarios had one of Detroit or CBJ moving but would one of those teams take precedence over the other? Especially since Columbus is just as east as Detroit is. You now only have 4 teams in the Southeast. Which team out of Philly/Pitts/NYR/NYI/NJD do you move? Especially if you sacrifice the geographical rivalries in place?

The league didn't want to pick one team over the other and this will also allow most teams to have an easier travel schedule during the regular season. It also allows teams to have a home and home with every team in the league so we don't have to wait 2-4 years for Sid or Ovechkin to come to town.

Its not just travel thats a concern
its also Television deals. A team like DALLAS really benefits from this. It was in the pacific division and almost all its games started at 9pm local time for them

regardless of the outcome, that geographical location can't be changed. one team will get screwed regardless.

the thing that sucks about the change is a team like philly can nearly ride bicycles to every team in their conference and sleep in their own bed every night. favoritism, geographical rivals, whatever, that just seems unfair.

Was watching That's Hockey today, and Detroit saves 10K miles of travel, while Florida travels +11K miles more when the alignment is in effect :lol

I wish Winnipeg was in our conference. Would be awesome to have all the Canadian teams together.
