Tripod Mount Bolt Does anyone know what thread the bolt for tripod mounts are? Can I just get that bolt? I have an idea for something I want to build. |
1/4"-20 don't use stainless/brass, it's soft and not good for screwing and unscrewing. |
Thanks you. TO THE HOME DEPOT! HUZZAH! |
don't like Ace? :fullofwin: |
Mike are there any that are double ended? Like a bolt without the cap. Posted via RS Mobile |

Real brass is actually very soft for a metal, thats why they use it for soft chisels and drifts, its less likely to mark up what ever you are hitting. I'm not sure what they use in tripod bolts, maybe its an alloy? the brass may just be used so it won't get stuck when over tightened. |

stainless is also soft, but harder than brass. not to mention there are literally hundreds of different grades. if you're going to use stainless i'd use a good marine quality, but hard to find and you will not find this in most hardware store bins. the whole idea of using a softer metal is that it will not damage the threads inside the camera, but this applies to hundreds of different applications(machinery, tools, etc). it's a lot easier to replace the bolt than get the other end repaired. imagine the cost if you fuxxored the threads inside your camera. i'd rather have something harder that i can screw/bolt on tightly, and will wear better. i don't know what Ronin's up to so that's why i suggested staying away from softer bolts. Ronin: so you want a stud , something like this? http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j0...ds-Bolt-SS.jpg you can get "ready rod" too, comes in long lengths(3', 6', etc): http://www.jamestowndistributors.com...s/00003036.jpg if you're going to have to cut something anyways, just buy a long bolt and cut the head off. |
