Like millions of people, 59-year-old James Richard Verone couldn't get health care coverage. What's different is that he decided to do something about it. He'd driven a truck for Coke for 17 years before losing his job when the economy took the plunge...

He found a new driving job, but that too went south. So he got a part-time job at a convenience store that naturally offered no health care. Still, he struggled in the job due to a bum back and problems with his foot that made him limp. He also has arthritis and carpal tunnel.

Then he noticed a protrusion on his chest. Eventually, the pain became more than he could handle.

So he went on food stamps, but that didn't help either. Finally, he came up with the one plan that would solve the problems of a broke man with no health care. He decided to go to prison.

On June 9, he woke up intending to rob a bank. But before he took a taxi to the RBC Bank in Gastonia, North Carolina, he sent a letter to the Gastonia Gazette, telling the paper he was about to rob the joint so he could get medical care.

"When you receive this a bank robbery will have been committed by me," Verone wrote. "This robbery is being committed by me for one dollar. I am of sound mind but not so much sound body."

When he arrived at the bank, he handed the teller a note, demanding just $1. Then he told the woman he was going to take a seat and wait for the cops to arrive.
Unfortunately, he didn't ask for enough money. Because he only wanted $1, he was charged with larceny instead of bank robbery. His bail is only $2,000, but he refuses to pay it. If he doesn't get an adequate sentence, he'll tell the judge he plans to just rob another bank.

At least he can finally get medical attention. He has an appointment to see a doctor on Friday. He's hoping to get foot and back surgery, and have someone figure out what's wrong with the growth on his chest. His plan is to spend four years in the slam so he'll get Social Security when he gets out.

The problem is that for working people like Verone, there are no other options for someone who can't find a job that provides insurance. ObamaCare would have helped, but the key elements don't go into effect until 2014.

Chickenshit Democrats didn't have the balls to provide immediate relief for those with compelling medical problems, upholding their long tradition of dedicated candy-assery.

Republicans, who inexplicably continue to breath without operative hearts, couldn't give a shit if people began dying on the streets. Their only mission is to protect Big Pharma and insurers, who once again are reporting record profits -- while your premiums continue to rise by more than 10 percent each year.

But that's just what we think. The more important question: How would you remedy America's wretched health care system, dearest reader?

You know your country has a issue when you read stories like this. I don't find this funny at all, it's more sad then anything.

ya i feel bad for the guy.
i don't think he planned on actually ROBBING the bank, but merely using that as an awareness tool to show that there are people like him that need healthcare

Yeah, this is pretty sad. It's like if you were homeless, would you rather starve and die on the streets (to any possible factor) or go to prison and food, shelter, a bed, medical attention, work out facility, etc...

wow

Oh, I don't know...use common sense and put forth laws and legislature that puts people's health before money? The drug and insurance business will always make huge money no matter what because people will always be sick...but they try to make $101 million instead of $100 million and if in the process, people die for that extra million, then that's just fine.

But hey...where's room for common sense in this world anyways?

I'll play devils advocate on this one.
Maybe the judge knew exactly what he was doing. He was providing shelter and food for this homeless man, and the executive does get jail time, but he can afford life after he gets out in a few years.

I know it doesnt make much sense, but perhaps...there was more to this than you realize...just a theory

But i dont know, could be just cause im tired...

^ i agree, more often than not media will sensationalize court cases with a negative connotation. They wrote it in a way that doesn't tell the entire story and the reasoning behind the ruling, and made it sound like the court did something outrageously horrible to this man, when in fact they were probably giving him exactly what he wanted with the minimum sentence for that specific crime. Lawyers don't become Judges for being irrational and illogical (save for a very few exceptions).

hotjoint 06-24-2011 07:33 AM

damn that's sad

I agree. The person was determined to do that for this very specific reason. If you sentence him lightly, he would simply get worse in an attempt for longer sentence. Why not just give what he wants in the first place.

Plus, robbing a bank is a very serious crime. It's a crime that can be sentenced to death in several countries. So it also sets the example to others that, unless you are determined to be in jail for a very long time, don't bother.
