Fifth Gear - McLaren MP4-12c vs Ferrari 458 Italia

tamazoid 06-27-2011 05:26 PM

I'm disappointed in the McLaren...

Oh well, the McLaren F1 is still my favorite car!

Dinan3 06-27-2011 06:05 PM

It's hard to believe that it's not even close to the 458.

LP700-4 06-27-2011 06:27 PM

Wow, all that hype and the complete carbon tub and all that just wiped out by the 458....Kinda disappointed, but all in all i woudnt mind having one =)

TOPEC 06-27-2011 06:56 PM

surprised the 458 is better than the mp4

anyone else noticed it was top gears track in reverse?

bloodmack 06-27-2011 07:48 PM

I was going to say.. some of those turns looked familiar LOL

hk20000 06-27-2011 08:00 PM

lol now they just use top gear test track wtf

JoshuaWong 06-27-2011 09:10 PM

have to wait and see what topgear times are like for the MP4 vs 458. I doubt the MP4 would be slower. Most other publication such as evo and autocar say basically the same thing MP4 > 458

RE-Jo 06-27-2011 09:23 PM

But you guys have to wonder if Ferrari sent out a crew of engineers to tune that 458 specifically for the comparison test.

^yup Chris Harris from EVO or autocar did a write up about this a while ago claiming many Ferrari test drives were tuned up.

Claimed many customer cars were nowhere near their tuned up "media" cars .

I seriously don't know if Ferrari would do this here, but we will have to see how the Stigness does with it.

didn't they say it was just a 1/10th of a second slower? or did i hear wrong?

Like to see the stig handle them

Death2Theft 06-28-2011 08:15 AM

Uh there are videos out there of the normal ferrari 360 press car vs the 360 scudera. The press car beats the scuds time and again. Just to give you an idea how "tweaked" the press cars are.

gilly 06-28-2011 09:41 AM

the mclaren looks good but it doesn't look exotic to me.

denham 06-28-2011 10:13 AM

I wouldn't buy one or the other based on laptimes, but even if the McLaren was a better drive I'd be hard pressed to buy it over the 458, which I think is much better looking and sounding.

MAN that guy's face must hurt from all that fake smiling.

TOS'd 06-28-2011 11:25 AM

Why wait for TG test when even they fixed the drag against the F1 and Veyron.

If you got to play with those cars every other day, don't you think you'd be smiling like that too?

Its not as if the McLaren is a BAD car, it is just being compared to what many are saying is Ferrari's BEST car ever. I'm also disappointed the macca wasn't better, especially how the driving aids can't be turned off. But as a 1st real attempt at as 'mass production' car, it is pretty impressive.

I think the track times could be very close between the two, but this review is mainly about the fun factor not the numbers.

fifth gear people are a weird bunch, the way they review, test and judge their cars is questionable. Not to mention the ferrari they got could have been one of those rigged test cars.

MP4-12C 2866lb / 592hp,443lb.tq
458 Italia 3274lb / 562hp,398lb.tq

Its weird how it would be slower on a track, I wonder whats the reason behind that.

McLaren wins in a straight line.
