Motorcyclist crashes in helmet law protest, dies - Yahoo! News

Oh the irony............

A bare-headed motorcyclist riding in protest of New York state's helmet law crashed, struck his head on the roadway and died from his injuries, state police said on Sunday.

Philip Contos, 55, was riding among a large group of motorcyclists staging an organized protest ride in western New York near Syracuse against the state law requiring all motorcyclists to wear helmets.

The Parish, New York, resident crashed on Saturday on Route 11 in Onondaga, New York, and was pronounced dead later at a local hospital, state Trooper Robert Jureller said.

"The doctor felt that the death could have been prevented if he simply had been wearing a helmet," Jureller said. "He hit the brakes, lost control, was ejected and struck his head on the road. He suffered a skull fracture."

So I wonder...for his buddies riding along with him who witnessed the accident. Will they now start wearing helmets after seeing first-hand how a life could have been saved by wearing a helmet? Or will they continue to be idiots and continue to rally for freedom to ride without helmets...

I'm sure many of them know and don't argue the fact that helmets can and do save lives, but I guess they still want the freedom to choose to not wear it and accept the risk.

I am good and fine with them having the freedom to accept the risk but if they accept the risk then they should accept ALL the costs associated with that risk. I personally don't want my tax dollars going towards some dumbasses hospital bill because he chooses to take a risk or my premiums from ICBC to go up because ICBC needs to cover bills and expenses associated with his claim.

like Dale Earnheart refusing to wear the hans device and dieing from a crash that caused a basilar skull fracture, which just happens to be exactly what a hans device was designed to prevent.

We could walk around in bubble suits all day to protect us from impact and air borne viruses so they should be law as well.

RRxtar 07-08-2011 07:59 PM

ya we should allow everyone to walk around shooting guns at each other too

extreme cases are fun to talk about.

like 1 in 5 motorbike riders who ride for more than a few years will crash. thats a pretty well known idea. and like 1 in 5 of those will hit their head hard enough to cause a serious injury if they werent wearing a helmet.
