Highway 1 is closed both ways from west of the Port Mann Bridge to the Schoolhouse-United Blvd. area due to tonight's hydro tower collapse west of the Port Mann Bridge.

There have been reports that a high voltage tower at 142 Street and McBride Drive in Surrey crumpled and its lines fell into the Fraser River.

Surrey and Coquitlam RCMP are scrambling to evacuate the area on either side of the Fraser River.

There are 5,000 properties in Surrey still without power, following reports that a hydro tower collapsed into the Fraser River earlier tonight.

Surrey RCMP confirmed that one tower had fallen down, but said the investigation was still underway.

Reports of a blackout started at around 8 p.m. There were 25,000 customers in Surrey without power for about two hours. 5,500 properties in Abbotsford were also affected.

B.C. Hydro has yet to confirm the cause of the massive outage.

wtf, I thought this was unrelated.

I was driving on king Road last night around 9pm and right at that intersection (king Road/Mcbride and 142 street there were cops and the street was closed. I also saw a wrecked car on a tow truck and a bunch of people looking down the hill (towards the river). I just assumed there was an accident and somebody went flying down the hill.

After reading this, I guess the tow truck may have just been en route somewhere, but I just assumed there was an accident.

I was out of power until about 11:30.

More news, and still no pic.

Highway 1 closed after massive power outage hits Abbotsford, Surrey

Two hydro towers collapsed along the Fraser River near the Port Mann bridge Monday night, causing a massive blackout affecting 25,000 properties in Surrey, New Westminster and Abbotsford.

The first 230 kV steel tower crumbled along the south bank of the Fraser River, slightly downstream of the bridge at about 9 p.m. The second tower, attached by power lines, fell further south inland.

The attached power lines fell into the Fraser River and onto the CP rail yard near the Port Mann bridge. The lines deactivated immediately when the towers collapsed and did not cause any injuries, according to B.C. Hydro.

The CP rail yard was closed off and the Port Authority was redirecting boat traffic along the Fraser River. B.C. Hydro crews began working on removing the fallen wires Monday night.

Coquitlam and Surrey RCMP advised people stay clear of the area, and shut down Highway 1 both ways from west of the Port Mann Bridge to the Schoolhouse-United Blvd. area in Coquitlam.

The tower collapsed after high river levels quickly accelerated erosion along the Fraser River, destabilizing the power lines.

"Today, the situation deteriorated as a result of higher river levels and electricity infrastructure near the Port Mann bridge was affected," a B.C. Hydro spokesperson said in a news release.

"We worked very quickly to respond and BC Hydro crews have restored power to the majority of customers and are continue working hard to restore power to an additional approximately 4,000 customers."

Lights flickered back on in Abbotsford and most of Surrey around 10:00 p.m. BC Hydro crews continued scrambling to restore power to the remaining affected customers late Monday night.

Actually, it IS in the water. It's on some concrete columns and they're going to be checking out the foundation for that one soon too for signs of strong erosion but there is some real tough currents right now making it near impossible i believe. That's what i got from watching the news tonight.

TekDragon 07-06-2011 09:22 AM

I almost had the cables kill me while I was working the other night. Was cool to see it come down though.
