5 Hour Energy

Who uses these? What they hell are they?

Is it even safe? One of the B vitamins, its like 8333% of the RDI. On the label they say things like "not inspected by the FDA", etc.

With so much marketing on the radio, and TV, etc.. they must be getting pretty big.

Any thoughts on this stuff? I tried a bottle under emergency circumstances.. (I virtually never drink energy drink stuff), but this stuff kept me up for like 8+ hours....

Mr.HappySilp 07-16-2011 10:16 PM

Pretty much all energy drinks is not good lol. I do drink time from time to time.

Worse one I try so far is those NDS shots. Man I finish half a bottle and I could feel my hear pounding like crazy. Is like I am wide awake but my mind is elsewhere.

strykn 07-16-2011 10:25 PM

i took one of these and a redbull before partying one time, lets just say i was so fucked up that I didn't feel the alcohol its strong stuff

stewie 07-17-2011 07:57 AM

i dont drink coffee, so instead i used to drink energy drinks...and lots of them

it got to the point where it felt like i was having a jammer..severe chest pains, heart beating so fast that i could feel my pulse everywhere on my body! after that i stopped drinkin them and shits gone back to normal for me....

i was on the skytrain tellin my buddy about it shortly after it had happend, and a lady standing across from me had overheard the story and told me and my buddy how she works at st pauls hospital and its a common thing for young adult males being admitted due to energy drinks.

i stay away from that shit now

k3mps 07-17-2011 06:47 PM

i only drink energy drinks when i absolutely need them.
i've had 5hr a few times and tbh it didn't work half the time. or i just didn't feel it =S
when it does work for me, it kicks in right away

deaner999 07-26-2011 06:31 PM

those things are terrible for u

Jegz 07-27-2011 02:29 AM

what would happen if u drink 5 in an hr

palepilsenpin0y 07-27-2011 02:56 AM

I've only had less than 10 energy drinks in my lifetime but I would say that the 5-hour energy drink was the best one (over Redbull and Monster). But again, I haven't drank enough of it for my opinion to be too valid.

Never drink any energy drink on a regular basis though. It wouldn't kill you to drink one every once in a while for emergencies, but I'd advise against relying on them so much.

This may seem like common knowledge to most, but every energy drink really does have chemicals that your body would much rather make do without.

MR_BIGGS 07-27-2011 06:31 AM

I rarely ever consume energy drinks. Use to do jagger bombs and that was really the only time I would, but now I never do.

I did drink the 5 Hour Energy about half way into my drive from Vancouver to Edmonton. It kept me fairly more alert than a redbull or monster energy drink would, but it definately isn't something I would want to do again. I felt my heartbeat quicken.

These things suck and don't work. I have had it a few times at work whenever I had to work late. Kicks in for 15 minutes then you crash :S

Spidey 07-27-2011 11:31 AM

the only energy drink i use is 5 hr energy... it works well for me as it doesnt get me wired but makes me alert and feel "good".. i did some research and one of the ingredients actually acts as an antidepressant.. found it.. this one Phenylalanine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

it is supposedly found in actual foods, but I am always skeptical when something is an "anti depressant"... besides the cost beign ridiculous.. i try not to drink them unless i totally need it (wake up at 5am after late night hockey).

ppl have to realize that crashing is different than having the drug wear off and being tired. for me, when i have too much coffee and straight up caffeine, i crash.. i feel wayyyy worse after it wears off.. when i use 5 hr energy, when it wears off i am tired.. pretty tired.. but not crash tired.

I think you would end up dead or at least in the hospital.

Can you explain the difference?

In some cases, wouldn't being tired be a result of the drug wearing off?

so an experiment.. but think of it this way.... in these 3 situations..

you wake up at 5am with only 3 hours of sleep you

1)take a 5 hr energy and by about noon you start feeling tired as it starts to wear off.

2)not take anything, and are tired... by noon you are tired.. the whole day you are tired...

3)you take red bull or coffee.. by the time the coffee or red bull wears off, you are probably more tired than you would be from 1 or 2

these are just hypothetical situations but that is the difference between crashing and a stimulant just wearing off.

Stuff works pretty good. I tend to mix it in my water bottle to dilute it a little while I am playing sports or at the gym. Straight up, upsets my stomach a little.

CorneringArtist 08-07-2011 04:29 PM

I don't really drink energy drinks that often, but the last time I did from lack of sleep, it carried me from the start my shift at work to after lunch. I felt like shit before it kicked in, and I was fine the rest of the day after I ate my lunch and the drink started to wear off.

I do usually drink Rockstar energy cola however, but that's usually when I'm in the States where it's cheap, and I don't really need to do anything active outside playing sports, or the drive back home.

mmm, you're really not supposed to mix physical activity with this shit...I'm not a man on a mission against energy drinks, but used to make me feel fucked up... There was a tv show that covered energy drinks... Typical scare piece, but still interesting.

It's no different from any other energy drink. Same amount of caffeine and sugar. Just less water, and different marketing approach. It's neither more nor less healthy than the others.

I don't know of any other energy drink that has 2000% daily value of B6 and the 8333% of B12.

SkinnyPupp 09-12-2011 02:50 AM

Not that it matters; anything over 10% will be eliminated in the urine immediately. Probably less actually, since you're taking it with a diuretic. Not that vitamin b would ever give you "energy"

i drank one of these and my heart almost jumped out of my chest.
im pretty sensitive to energy drinks and stuff and i felt really uncomfortable after.

spoon.ek9 09-12-2011 10:25 AM

i've mentioned this before in the canucks thread but there is no such thing as a caffeine crash. anyone who has taken biology 12 *should* remember this. the crash you feel is from the sugar that you consume with your coffee (or energy drink that might contain sugar). think about it for a second from when you were a kid and had sugar rushes. same concept.

caffeine by itself does not cause you to crash after it has worn off.

Yes you'd get the same effect by drinking 8 cups of coffee. Even though this "5 hour" thing is marketed as giving you a different type of "energy" than caffienated drinks, they are simply lying to you.
