My name is Nina Hoope and I am an editor at CityZapper, a Dutch publisher. We produce (printing-on-demand) cityguides, iPhone applications and a website. We're in the process of updating our cityguide about Tokyo.

In our research, we were not able to get in touch with Maisen for a picture. On Flickr we found your picture, which would be a perfect visual image to go with our informational piece.

Unfortunately for us, your picture carries the symbol Creative Common of ‘all rights reserved’. Now we would like to ask if you would be ok with us using the picture? It will be used commercially, and your (real) name will be shown underneath the picture, with the caption you like. The picture might also be used by our clients/third parties for the same goal as ours.

The picture I would like to use is:

Can you please send us jour approval to use the picture?

You should only give them permission if they use a ridiculous caption underneath, ie. "Tonkatsu omnomnomnom, mother fuckers"

the caption should be "I was to cheap to compensate the photographer"

..Well look at it this way. Atleast they asked you for your consent. Most companies wouldn't give jackshit about you.

I remember a high-end company [can't remember what is called] that stole an image from a photographer, edited the watermark with theirs, and the company made tons of money off of that image. The photographer was just an ordinary guy and didn't make shit from it.

this is why all my images on flickr are either copyrighted, or under the CC that it cannot be used for commercial purposes

I require payment for all uses of my photos. Never be the nice guy. You're just ruining the market.

Unless it's for charity or a non-profit organization with a good cause. Then I'd consider letting them use it for free.

Otherwise, fuck em. Tell them to pony up a fee or else they can find their own photos.

Don't let them convince you that the exposure is enough payment either.

have given away a couple of pics. i can be bought to stop doing that.
