I actually use my hockey stick now, and try to get it to crawl on it so that I can drop it in the toilet.
It's incredibly handy at taking out spiders that you don't want to kill with mess.

Especially when they are on the ceiling, and if you have one of those ceilings that have the bumpy texture...
too much of a bitch to clean if you just smack it.

While on the topic of catching bugs, I use packing tape to catch silverfish cuz they're slippery mofos and they leave quite the mess if you squish them.

i went to the garage to get spray paint and saw three spiders and who knows how many eggs. determined after reading this thread i just sprayed the fuck out of them. LOL
