Reliability of VW

Hey guys,

I'm looking into buying a 2012 tiguan with the 2.0t engine and I'm just wondering how well does a VW hold up as far as maintenance and also their tranny (i'll be gettin a 6mt).

TIA

i believe in the european market, BMW and VW(Audi) are the most reliable. If you're looking to drive over 2XX.XXX + then go for Japanese Domestic. Maintenance for VW is fair.

You'll likely have at 4-5 years of powertrain warranty. If you plan on keeping it longer than that you should be able to tell during that time if it's going to be reliable or not and worth keeping.

If that's what you want, I wouldn't see any reason to not buy one.

reliability is horrible.

don't buy a car. LEASE IT.

Lease a 2011/2012 BMW X3 (take advantage of their lease programs) - you wont be dissapointed.

use it for 4 years, return, repeat.

BMWs and VWs can't go over 200,000km??

i had a passat 1.8t and gave it another shot with a jetta 1.8t.

passat was new when i had it and plagued with problems.... mostly electrical..

wolfsberg jetta had periodic mechanical problems and leaking water in the cablin. while the stock bbs rims corroded eating the rims killing every tire it had over time.. vw usa had a recall on it but vw canada will not resolve the issue for there are not that many wolfsburgs out there... and exceeded its warranty period...

so i had problems with electrical, mechanical, and body from my 2 x vw's from the last decade.

No, I did not say BMWs and VWs can't go over 200,000km. Any car can pass beyond 200,000km or even 1 million km if wished. It is the cost of repairing that matters, OP's concerns are maintenance and tranny.

i've had my jetta for over 200k and all i've ever done is change the oil and put gas in it. all my vw's have been like that. i've never had a money pit vw ever, even my aircooleds

The only reliable vw's were made pre 2000. Maybe even pre 90's.

The Tiguan is a great vehicle, enjoy, have fun. It's pretty good on maintenance.

Quite a bit of issues and warranty work. If you don't care cause it'll be covered by warranty and you'll be hanging out at the dealership a fair amount, then by all means. Worked with Clarkdale's customers before. Problematic ones seem to be the new Jettas, Tiguans, and Golfs.
